I don’t know whether my mother considers firing her household help a blessing or a curse.

My younger brother is an ambitious and successful man. Unwilling to work under anyone else, he started his own trading company, and ever since, his business has flourished. His success allows him to provide for his family generously, and his wife, my sister-in-law, doesn’t have to work.

She stays home to raise their children and handle the household. My brother dotes on her, constantly worried she might feel disadvantaged compared to women who work office jobs. Every month, he transfers $5,000 to her account for household expenses and personal spending. He’s even told her that if she ever runs out of money, she can ask for more without hesitation—he’s always willing to provide for her and their kids.

While my brother works tirelessly to sustain their lifestyle, my sister-in-law enjoys a life of leisure. She cycles through the latest fashion trends, always dressed to impress, even at home. She spends her days applying makeup, going to the gym, or traveling with friends. Weekends are reserved for coffee dates and fine dining, especially when my brother is away for work.

When my mother fell ill, my brother brought her to live in the city, ensuring she could receive better medical care. However, my sister-in-law didn’t contribute to her care at all. Instead, she hired a full-time caregiver for my mother. Whenever I visited, I’d find the caregiver diligently attending to my mom, while my sister-in-law was off enjoying her day.

On days when my mom was in pain and needed a massage, she’d ask my sister-in-law, who would simply delegate the task to the caregiver. My mom would occasionally express her loneliness, wishing my sister-in-law would sit with her and chat. But my sister-in-law always claimed she was too busy or dismissed her as being overly needy.

Last week, my mom was hospitalized due to a health scare. My sister-in-law visited her once, briefly, before leaving on a pre-planned vacation with her friends. She only returned after my mom was discharged.

Yesterday, I sat down with my sister-in-law and tried to have a heart-to-heart conversation. I suggested she spend more time with my mom, as her health has been declining and none of us know how much time she has left. Instead of listening, my sister-in-law became defensive, telling me I was meddling in her life. She said, “If we’re paying for a caregiver, we should use them to their full capacity.”

Before she could finish her sentence, her 16-year-old son, who had been quietly listening, chimed in:
“Mom, you’re absolutely right. When I grow up and earn as much as Dad, I’ll make sure to send you to a retirement home so you can enjoy your old age. You’ll have plenty of friends there, so you’ll never feel lonely.”

His comment stunned my sister-in-law into silence. She looked completely taken aback. After a moment, she stammered that she didn’t want to spend her old age in a retirement home. She said she’d rather stay with her family, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, receiving their love and care.

From that moment, she seemed to have a change of heart. She declared that she would let the caregiver go and take over my mom’s care herself. She said she wanted to set a good example for her children by showing them how to honor and care for their elders.

But knowing my sister-in-law’s love for leisure and aversion to hard work, I can’t help but wonder how long her newfound determination will last. Will she truly be able to care for my mother with the patience and dedication required, or is this just a fleeting moment of guilt-driven resolve? Only time will tell.
