Brittney Griner expressed feeling ‘depressed’ due to Underperforming, Public Pressure of chasing her back to Russia, and Unworthy of representing America.
Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner feels “blessed” to be part of Team USA and represent the United States in the upcoming Paris Olympics. The nine-time All-Star is heading to Europe for the first time since her distressing detainment in Russia in 2022. With that ordeal behind her, Griner is ready to travel abroad again, confident that all will be well.
Griner attributes much of her current mental state to the support she’s received, emphasizing the significance of counseling during her challenging time. In a recent interview, the 6-foot-9 center highlighted how valuable it has been to have supportive people around her who recognize when she might be struggling.
“Having really good people around me who understand and notice if I’m wavering has been crucial,” Griner shared with Marc J. Spears of Andscape. “And not being afraid to seek counseling is important.
“I believe more people should utilize this resource. Everyone should have someone to talk to, as it can be tough to open up to family and friends due to potential biases.”
Griner has put her traumatic 10-month detention in Russia behind her, but she continues to seek counseling.
“There is no bias with a counselor,” she explained. “They are there to ensure you’re doing well. I still use it now, even though I’m in a good place.”
It takes remarkable strength to endure such a harrowing experience in a Russian prison and to overcome the pain from it.
