As King Charles Extends Invitation to Donald Trump, Prince Harry Is Accused of Taking Subtle Jab at the President

Not long after King Charles invited President Donald Trump for an “unprecedented second state visit,” Prince Harry hinted at his own political views during an unexpected speech. Though Harry said he is “not one to be caught in the divide between left or right views, not cornered by a belief in blue or red,” many thought he was making a dig at Trump during a speech at the Upfront Summit in Los Angeles.

Prince Harry spoke about ‘a sickness in leadership.’

Prince Harry did not mention Donald Trump specifically during his speech on Thursday, February 27. That didn’t stop people from assuming that some of his comments might’ve been about the president, especially because Harry did mention “a sickness in leadership” where politics are concerned.

“Now, this would be a great time to talk about how a sickness in leadership across sectors, from politics to tech, can have a detrimental effect on millions, if not billions, of people,” Harry said during his speech, per Newsweek . “When service to others is sacrificed for personal gain, when basic morals and empathy are abandoned in favor of power and control … but I’m not going to get into all that now.”

Harry’s comments came just after his father extended an invitation to Donald Trump.

That same day, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave the American president an invitation for an “unprecedented second state visit” from King Charles. Via the letter, King Charles showed that he is interested in the “opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest,” per CNN .

“I remember with great fondness your visits to the United Kingdom during your previous Presidency,” King Charles wrote, according to CNN. Elsewhere in the letter, he told Donald Trump that through planning a second state visit, “we will further enhance the special relationship between our two countries, of which we are both so proud.”

The proposed state visit is controversial , especially following the American leader’s clash with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. King Charles has also met with Zelenskyy .

Trump praised King Charles.

When presented with the letter from King Charles, the president described Charles as “a great, great gentlemen” with a “beautiful” signature. “He’s a beautiful man. A wonderful man,” he said of King Charles, per CNN. “I’ve gotten to know him very well, actually.”

The president previously criticized Harry’s wife Meghan Markle.

While the president has praised King Charles and other members of the royal family, he is not a fan of the Duchess of Sussex. In explaining his decision to not deport Prince Harry, Trump called Meghan Markle “terrible.”

“I’ll leave [Harry] alone,” Trump previously said. “He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.” Trump then went on to say that he thinks “poor Harry is being led around by the nose.” He didn’t seem to have anything positive to say about Harry and Meghan at the time, but he did compliment Prince William.

“I think William is a great young man,” he said.

After these comments about Harry and Meghan, people thought Harry made a dig at the president in another speech.

During Harry’s speech at the opening ceremony for the Invictus Games, Harry made a comment about “weak moral character.” Some people wondered if Prince Harry was referring to Donald Trump during that moment, though Harry did not mention the president.

“At this moment, when there is no shortage of crises, no absence of uncertainty, no lack of weak moral character in the world, the values you embody — the way you carry yourselves — not only at the Invictus Games, but each and every day, your courage, your resilience, your humanity illuminate a path forward for us all,” Harry said during that speech.
