The Netherlands was too difficult a challenge for Team USA, and LeBron James has all sort of comment for it.
Worthy de Jong (54) shoots over Kareem Maddox (9) and Canyon Barry (6).
In a stunning turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Team USA’s3×3 men’s basketball team faced a crushing defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, ending their Olympic run with a brutal 21-6 loss.
The elimination match, witnessed by none other than NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, left the American squad reeling as they were run off the court under the setting sun at the iconic Place de la Concorde.
The game started on a challenging note for Team USA, which was already grappling with the absence of the injured Jimmer Fredette. With only Canyon Barry, Kareem Maddox, and Dylan Travis available to play, the team struggled to keep up with the high-paced game. Despite a quick two-pointer from Travis, the U.S. appeared disorganized, missing several shots and committing multiple turnovers.
An uphill battle for Team USA
Three minutes into the game, the Netherlands took a commanding lead at 5-4 and quickly extended it to 12-5. Their defense and impeccable shotmaking proved too formidable for the U.S. to overcome. The frustration was palpable when Maddox fouled Worthy de Jong, resulting in a technical foul that allowed the Netherlands to further their lead to 17-6.
In the aftermath of the defeat, the team members were seen reflecting on their performance under the Paris sky. Maddox highlighted the disparity in opportunities and support for 3×3 basketball in the United States compared to other countries.
The team regretted the defeat
“It’s not visible except for every four years in the United States,” Maddox lamented. “There’s no professional-level tournaments there. The team we just played has been building and refining that very team for this very moment for seven years now, and we’re just in a little bit of a different situation. Those are all full-time 3×3 guys.”
Travis echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the unrealistic expectations placed on them. “People that don’t know 3×3 will see this and think, ‘What the heck are those guys doing? They’re terrible. But if you know the game, it’s almost impossible to win at this stage. It’s so much intensity, and it takes so much out of you. To win two games, and two came down to the wire, it was a hell of a feat for us.”
LeBron James has expressed his frustration and disappointment following Team USA’s unexpected elimination from the Paris 2024 Olympics. In a candid statement, James criticized the current roster’s lack of cohesion and commitment, saying, “It’s incredibly disheartening to see a team with so much talent fall short like this. We had the potential to dominate, but it’s clear there were issues with focus and unity. This should serve as a wake-up call for all involved to reassess what it truly means to represent Team USA.” His comments reflect a broader sentiment of disillusionment among American basketball fans and highlight the stark contrast between past and present performances on the global stage.
Despite their elimination, Team USA’s effort and determination on the Olympic court remain commendable. The shocking defeat serves as a reminder of the fierce competition and dedication required to excel at the highest levels of international sport.
