On the morning of June 11, Indiana Fever players and coaches woke up to a 3-10 win-loss record following the previous day’s 17-point loss to the Connecticut Sun. This was not how Caitlin Clark‘s rookie season in the WNBA was supposed to go; head coach Christie Sides was struggling to devise a system that would get the best out of Clark and the Fever‘s two other young stars Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith.
Fast-forward to Aug. 28, and the Fever have since rattled off 11 wins from 17 games. Indiana has the third-best record in the Eastern Conference and are seventh in the overall standings with 10 games remaining. This turnaround can in no small part be attributed to Clark’s growing comfort in pro basketball, which saw her rewarded with Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time on Tuesday.
Clark intent on keeping it moving
Clark took to social media to acknowledge her newest accolade during her stellar rookie campaign, but the All-Star guard did not say much about it. Instead, she reposted a screenshot initially uploaded to Instagram by her agency, Excel Sports Management.
Off the court, there’s little drama or fuss surrounding Clark — even though some of her more obnoxious fans, like Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, have sure made it difficult to separate the player from her fanbase.
On the court, Clark is as focused as ever. The 22-year-old has bigger prizes in mind beyond her Player of the Week nod; the former Iowa star is the firm favorite for Rookie of the Year and could guide the Fever back to the playoffs sooner than expected, bringing an end to their eight-year postseason drought.
And of course, Clark wants championships after coming up short twice in the college ranks, while her current trajectory means she will be an MVP candidate sooner as opposed to later.
