Yesterday was a surprising day in women’s college basketball as some of the top teams, like USC and South Carolina, didn’t exactly look like the dominant forces they’re ranked to be. The cracks in the armor were especially apparent for South Carolina, who struggled without Camila Cardoso’s presence inside. Though Chloe Kitts and Tahina Powpow played well, Cardoso’s absence left a big hole. On the bright side, Te-Hina Paopao had a decent game, while there’s still optimism that star freshman Talaysia Cooper will come into her own. Additionally, after a recent legal issue, Raven Johnson remains a key player, showcasing her elite defense despite her shooting struggles.
Raven Johnson: Elite Defense, Struggles with Shooting
Johnson’s lockdown defense remains outstanding, but her shooting needs work. While some talk about her 35% shooting rate, it’s largely because teams don’t guard her, letting her take uncontested shots. In tight games, this could be a liability as defenses adjust to her shooting struggles.
Rising Stars: Syla Swords and the Michigan Challenge
One player who made a big impact yesterday was Michigan’s Syla Swords, who nearly led her unranked team to an upset over South Carolina. The Canadian 18-year-old impressed with her quick release, ability to finish with both hands, and skill at finding creative ways to score. Swords’ performance against a powerhouse like South Carolina could inspire other young stars to consider playing for non-traditional programs.
LSU’s Underrated Strength
Despite winning the national championship two years ago and returning with many key players, LSU remains underrated. Flau’jae Johnson, who some consider even more impactful than Angel Reese last year, continues to improve, and Anna Morrow shines as a college player. With a solid roster and two of the best players in the country, it’s puzzling that LSU isn’t ranked higher.
Olivia Miles Returns with a Triple-Double
Olivia Miles made a powerful return for Notre Dame after a long absence, putting up a triple-double. While the team faced a weaker opponent, her impressive passing and flashy play showed she’s back at full strength. Although Miles needs to work on her shooting, her skills as a passer make her one of the best in the game.
Looking Ahead: A Season with No Clear Dominant Team
This season, there’s no dominant team. South Carolina can’t rely on Cardoso as an inside safety net anymore, LSU has some weaknesses to address, and USC’s heavy dependence on a few players might cost them. Even UConn, who struggled to clinch the title in recent years, faces health concerns for some key players. This year’s mix of strong teams with clear weaknesses means we’re likely in for a highly competitive season where anything can happen.
