Angel Reese lashes out as she wasn’t Invited but Caitlin Clark was announced as featured speaker for Women’s Sports Awards in KCMO – “Should have been me!”

The announcement of Caitlin Clark as the featured speaker for the 2025 Women’s Sports Awards in Kansas City has sparked controversy, particularly from Angel Reese, one of basketball’s rising stars. Reese, who was notably not invited, took to social media to express her frustration, stating, “This should have been me!”

Clark Named Keynote Speaker for Prestigious Event

Clark, widely regarded as women’s basketball’s most prominent star, will headline the event on February 4, 2025, at the T-Mobile Center. Hosted by WIN for KC, a nonprofit focused on empowering women and girls through sports, the luncheon is a significant annual fundraiser celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

“As we recognize incredible women and girls who have made an impact through sports in the Kansas City area, it’s an honor to have one of the preeminent athletes in the world — Caitlin Clark — at the Women’s Sports Awards,” said Taylor Obersteadt, director of WIN for KC.

Clark’s achievements have been nothing short of historic. She broke records at the University of Iowa, became the first WNBA rookie to surpass 3,000 career points, 750 rebounds, and 750 assists, and earned titles like 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year and All-WNBA First Team selection.

Angel Reese Reacts Publicly

Reese, who gained fame both on and off the court during her collegiate years at LSU and rookie year in Chicago Sky, took issue with her exclusion. The rookie made headlines for her exceptional talent and high-profile endorsement deals, making her one of the most recognized faces in women’s sports.

“I’ve worked just as hard and have a story that deserves to be told,” Reese shared in a now-deleted tweet. “The industry loves to play favorites, but my time will come.”

Sources close to Reese suggest that she felt sidelined despite her growing influence in the sport. Many fans echoed her sentiments, arguing that her achievements and her efforts to promote women’s basketball deserved recognition at such a prestigious event.

Clark’s Message and Event Details

Despite the backlash, Clark remains focused on her role at the awards. “Sports have played a pivotal role in my life, helping develop critical skills like teamwork, resiliency, and confidence,” Clark said in the event’s announcement. “I’m excited to celebrate those who are making an impact alongside WIN for KC.”

Tickets for the luncheon are limited and went on sale on November 20, with the event expected to draw a large audience.

A Tale of Two Stars

The brewing rivalry between Reese and Clark isn’t new. The two athletes have frequently been compared due to their on-court performances and cultural impact. While Clark is often celebrated for her humility and traditional approach, Reese embraces her unapologetic confidence and bold personality, resonating with a different demographic.

This incident highlights the complexities of fame and recognition in women’s sports, where athletes often face scrutiny not just for their skills but for their personas.

What’s Next for Angel Reese?

Reese’s frustration underscores a broader issue of representation and inclusion in women’s sports. Despite her disappointment, Reese remains a powerful voice and figure in the industry. With her recent endorsement deals and advocacy efforts, including her work promoting mental health and equity in sports, Reese is poised to continue making waves.

While the 2025 Women’s Sports Awards may belong to Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese’s fans believe her moment on the stage is inevitable. “This isn’t the end of my story,” Reese concluded in a recent post. “It’s just the beginning.”
