A Mother’s Struggle to Heal the Heartbreak of Her Daughter from a Painful Past
Life is full of twists and turns, and sometimes, the past haunts us in ways we least expect. For a woman from Central Vietnam, her journey through hardship, loss, and mistakes has left her with a heart full of regret. But as she watches her daughter struggle with the shame of their family’s past, she realizes that the hardest battle of all might be helping her child forgive her.
The mother’s story begins in her humble beginnings, where she grew up in a poor family and was unable to continue her education beyond grade 10. At 18, she moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live with her aunt and learned to sew. There, she met a man at a garment company, and they eventually moved in together, without marriage, thinking that this would be the start of a stable life. However, things took a turn for the worse once they had their first daughter.
Her partner’s behavior became abusive. He was lazy, immature, and violent, and the mother had to endure years of physical abuse, all while raising their daughter in a cramped and chaotic living space. Finally, when her daughter was 5 years old, witnessing her child pleading with her partner to stop hitting her, the mother decided she had had enough. She fled with her daughter to Vung Tau, where she worked a variety of odd jobs to make ends meet.
Life was still difficult for them, and after a while, she found herself in another ill-fated relationship. This time, she became pregnant with another man’s child, who denied responsibility. Despite this, she chose to keep the baby, and after the birth, she worked hard to raise her children alone. Her eldest daughter, seeing her mother struggle, worked after school selling lottery tickets to help provide for the family. Later, when the youngest child was born, her daughter stopped selling tickets to help care for her sibling.
The mother’s heart ached to see her child take on such adult responsibilities at such a young age. She blamed herself, but there seemed to be no other choice. She promised herself that she would never live with another man again, as she worked tirelessly to raise her two children on her own.
Despite her struggles, the mother was still a young woman, and her attractive appearance meant that she was not without admirers. She developed a relationship with a man who delivered seafood to the restaurant where she worked. However, once again, her life took an unexpected turn. She became pregnant, but this time, her partner offered her a large sum of money to leave Vung Tau and not cause problems in his personal life. She felt humiliated, and once again, returned to her hometown, pregnant and ashamed.
With the money from her lover, she was able to start a small business and her family’s situation improved slightly. However, the reputation of having children with three different men weighed heavily on her, and her daughter, especially, began to struggle with the stigma of their situation. The girl was mocked by her peers and grew increasingly embarrassed about her family’s circumstances.
Finally, the mother’s eldest daughter decided to leave their hometown. She pursued higher education and chose to live in Ho Chi Minh City, away from the embarrassment and shame of their past. Despite the mother’s hope that her daughter would one day return and understand, the pain remained. On her graduation day, her daughter told her: “I can’t take the shame anymore. I don’t want to come back home.”
The mother respected her daughter’s decision but kept hoping that as her daughter matured, she would come to understand and forgive her for the choices she had made in the past. The mother continued to visit her daughter, but recently, another hurdle emerged. Her daughter confessed that she had a boyfriend and no longer wanted the mother to visit, afraid that her past would impact her future relationships.
This revelation broke the mother’s heart. She felt conflicted between understanding her daughter’s desire to protect her future and her own need to apologize and seek forgiveness for her past mistakes. The mother worries about what will happen when her daughter eventually shares the truth with her boyfriend and fears that hiding the truth may cause her daughter even more pain in the future.
Now, the mother is torn between trying to protect her daughter from the embarrassment of their past and accepting the consequences of her actions. She knows that her mistakes have shaped her daughter’s life, but she still hopes that one day her daughter will be able to forgive her. She is willing to sacrifice everything to ensure a better future for her children.
The pain of knowing that she is the source of her daughter’s shame weighs heavily on her heart, but the mother’s only wish is to see her children happy, understanding that they have the strength to face the past and move forward together.
