The NFL’s female viewership saw a significant spike last season, with more than 50 percent growth, and much of that can be attributed to none other than pop icon Taylor Swift. Even Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback, has acknowledged the impact Swift has had on the league’s audience.
In a recent conversation with Chris Simms on Sunday Night Football, Mahomes shared insights into how Swift’s influence has not only brought more viewers to the NFL but also how she may be contributing to the Chiefs’ success in unexpected ways.
“I think it’s been cool to see the girls & the women that have really embraced watching football,” Mahomes said.
“I know being a girl dad how cool it is for me to see these little girls & daughters spending time with their dad watching football.
“Then, meeting Taylor & realizing how genuine & cool she is, that’s been special to me because she’s the most famous person in the world. She’s really interested in football.
“The NFL’s viewership experienced a 53 percent spike among teenage girls, a 24 percent increase among women aged 18-24, and a 34 percent rise among women aged 35 and above.”
Swift’s impact
This past season marked the highest regular-season female viewership since the NFL began tracking such data in 2000. Swift, with her massive following, has played a pivotal role in driving this increase, benefiting both the league’s popularity and its bottom line. But Mahomes hinted that Swift‘s impact might extend beyond just boosting ratings.
Mahomes suggested that Swift could somehow assist the Chiefs in their pursuit of victory in the 2024 season. While the details remain under wraps, the quarterback hinted at the possibility that the team might incorporate something inspired by Swift into their strategy next year.
“She’s asking a lot of great questions. She’s already drawing up plays. We might have to put one in,” Mahomes noted.
