Margot Robbie’s upcoming film with Ryan Gosling, Barbie, has transpired into a sensational affair given how practically the entire world is awaiting its release with white-hot impatience. But while Barbie is the talk of the town at present and even holds the potential to metamorphose into a landmark project for Robbie’s career, The Wolf of Wall Street will always wear the crown of the film that earned the actress her dazzling breakthrough in Hollywood. Her experience on the dark comedy’s set, however, wasn’t as remarkable as the movie’s success.

The Wolf of Wall Street: The Reality Behind This Iconic Scene

Inspired by Jordan Belfort’s memoir of the same name, Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street was a critical and commercial triumph comprising a stellar ensemble cast and an intriguingly prolific plot topped off with the perfect garnish of dark humor. Studded with A-listers, the movie constituted a star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Margot Robbie, who earned her breakout role as Naomi Lapaglia, and Belfort himself along with Scorsese.

But The Wolf of Wall Street didn’t just open a door of golden opportunities for Robbie, it also became a particularly prized possession of Scorsese’s after becoming his highest-grossing movie ever, making an impressive figure of around $407 million at the global box office. The situation behind the scenes though, the Suicide Squad star revealed, was much less “glamorous” than what the audience perceived on screen.

Talking about the same in an interview with The Daily Beast, Robbie, 32, explained how she ended up getting injured while performing one of the wildest scenes from the movie. The scene in question is the one where Robbie and DiCaprio get intimate whilst being sprawled on top of a boatload of cash.
“I got a million paper cuts on my back from all that money! It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. If anyone is ever planning on having sex on top of a pile of cash: don’t. Or maybe real money is a bit softer, but the fake money is like paper, and when I got up off the bed, I turned around to get my robe and everyone gasped. I said, ‘What is it?’ And they said, ‘You look like you’ve been whipped a million times. Your back is covered in a thousand red scratches.’”

That ought to hurt.

Margot Robbie’s Unglamorous Experience Off the Camera

Though getting papercuts from a s*x scene doesn’t sound too thrilling, it wasn’t the only time when Robbie underwent a sense of discomfort or embarrassment. After all, getting intimate on camera with the eyes of a horde of people glued onto you isn’t an easy feat. So it makes sense why the Amsterdam star’s skin would prickle with unpleasantness while filming such scenes.

“It doesn’t come across when you’re watching the movie, but in reality, we’re in a tiny bedroom with 30 crew crammed in,” Robbie told Porter about yet another intimate scene from the film. “And for 17 hours I’m pretending to be touching myself. It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit.”

Naomi’s s*x scenes with DiCaprio’s Jordan might have come off as an effortless endeavor to fans, but as Robbie said, in reality, things are seldom as coruscating as they appear to be on cameras.

The Wolf of Wall Street can be streamed on Netflix.
