LeBron James and Vince Carter stand alone in NBA history as the only two players to play in 22 seasons — but sooner or later, the end of the road beckons.

James, the Los Angeles Lakers‘ superstar forward, is averaging his fewest points per game since his rookie season, way back in 2003/04. As he nears a milestone birthday, James is starting to come face-to-face with NBA mortality — which may be just around the corner.

Redick speaks about LeBron’s minutes load

Lakers head coach J.J. Redick met with reporters on Wednesday and revealed that James is not with his Lakers teammates for “personal reasons”, and that the four-time NBA champion’s absence is excused — although Redick did not offer further details or clarity on when James would return.

Redick further elaborated on his staff’s strategy for managing their best player’s workload — which has become legendary in NBA circles, given James’ longevity.

“In game, he’s asked for a sub a couple of times because he’s gassed,” Redick told the media. “I think for us, we have to be cognizant as we play more and more games just the (cumulative) effect of playing a lot of minutes. Sunday (against Portland), being banged up with the foot thing, we felt like it was a good opportunity for him to get some rest.”

With 45 more minutes played, LeBron will pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most minutes in NBA history — nearly two years after he passed Kareem as the NBA’s all-time top scorer. Over his 22 NBA seasons, James has gotten used to a heavy workload — only twice in his career has he averaged under 35 minutes per game over the course of a season.

But as the King‘s 40th birthday nears, it is clear that Redick and his staff have no problem monitoring James’ minutes so that he retains maximum effectiveness and continues to achieve things never before achieved by a 40-year-old NBA player. Whether James is on board or not could say a lot about if he wants to continue playing past the summer of 2025, given his multitude of accolades that is the envy of just about every basketball player.
