Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark has had her share of supporters this season, but perhaps none have been more vocal as of late than Hall of Fame guard Nancy Lieberman.
The former WABA MVP and Sacramento Kings assistant has recently defended Clark from several critics, including WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes, even going so far as to say her friendship with Swoopes ended because the two vehemently disagreed about Clark’s star status being good for the league.
Just days after comparing Clark to NBA icon Michael Jordan, Lieberman made perhaps an even bolder Clark comparison, likening the 22-year-old rookie to the biggest pop star in the world.
“It doesn’t matter who people fancy at the moment,” Lieberman told SiriusXM NBA Radio. “It’s Caitlin Clark. She’s the Taylor Swift of women’s basketball right now.
“…Her fans are like Swifties; they’re extraordinarily loyal. And in every arena you go into, half the people there are her fans wearing her jerseys. She’s a media superstar, but damn — she’s backed it up every step of the way.”
The comparison doesn’t seem to be too far off-base considering Clark’s mega-star status in the WNBA.
She’s broken multiple records for television ratings, merchandise sales and attendance numbers this season. She’s also recently come under fire from opposing players for having more fans in their arenas than they do.
Clark, who’s a noted Swift fan, was named the WNBA Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month in August. She’s averaged 24.5 points, nine assists and 5.8 rebounds per game since the Olympic break.
