“We Know We Win Games When We Keep Teams Under 84. We Score Perfectly Well; That’s Not Our Problem. The Problem Is….” – Without Telling Coach Christie Sides, Caitlin Clark Pinpoints The Team’s Biggest Problem And How To Fix It

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have been one of the most explosive teams on the offensive end throughout the 2024 WNBA season. While their offense has been a bright spot, the rookie explained that the team’s biggest issue lies on the defensive side of the ball.

Clark was asked about Indiana’s biggest focus during the WNBA’s break in the season for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

She quickly responded, mentioning that the team’s improvement on the defensive end is vital for Indiana’s goal of reaching the postseason.

She believes the offense will get better with time, especially with chemistry building in the locker room, but the Fever need to find a way to defend at a high level.

“I think defense is definitely our biggest focus coming into this little break for us,” Clark said. “We know that we win games when we hold teams below 84 points. We’re scoring the ball perfectly fine; it’s not our problem. Obviously, our offense is only going to get better and better, but if we can find a way to get rid of seven points every single, I think we’ll be in position to be a lot more successful down the stretch.”

They’re currently ranked as the No. 7 team in the WNBA’s defensive ratings.

Indiana is ranked No. 11 in opponents’ fast break points per game and No. 12 in opponents’ second-chance points per game.

Clark explained that the Fever has focused on the defensive side of the ball throughout the past few practices. It’s clear that they’ll need to make major improvements, as they’re ranked at the bottom of the league in multiple categories.

The rookie currently averages 17.1 points and a league-leading 8.2 assists per game for the No. 7 team in the WNBA’s overall rankings.

Clark and the Fever will look to make a defensive statement in their next matchup, which is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET against the Phoenix Mercury.
