Andrea Bocelli delivered a special Easter Sunday performance at the iconic Duomo cathedral in Milan on April 12, 2020, with no audience present. The concert, titled Music for Hope, was streamed globally on Bocelli’s YouTube channel to comply with social distancing measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.
Bocelli was accompanied by Emanuele Vianelli, the cathedral’s organist, who played from a distance. The selected pieces for this poignant performance were meant to offer a message of love, healing, and hope to Italy and the world during this challenging time. Among the pieces were the well-known Bach/Gounod Ave Maria, Mascagni’s Sancta Maria, and an arrangement of John Newton’s timeless Amazing Grace.
The renowned Italian tenor, invited by the City of Milan and the Duomo itself to deliver a special solo performance, expressed his sentiments: “On this day, when we celebrate the triumph of life, I am honored and delighted to respond with a resounding ‘Sì’ to the invitation of the City and the Cathedral of Milan.”
Bocelli adds: “I believe in the power of collective prayer; I believe in the Christian Easter, a universal symbol of rebirth that is needed by everyone—whether they are believers or not—especially in these times.”
He continues, “Through music, streamed live and bringing together millions of people worldwide in a shared experience, we will embrace the beating heart of this wounded Earth, a magnificent international symbol that fills us with Italian pride.”
The Andrea Bocelli Foundation is actively fundraising to support hospitals, aiding in the acquisition of necessary medical and protective equipment amid the coronavirus pandemic.
