Howie Mandel and Katie Waissel Clash Over Liam Payne’s Death and Duty of Care in Reality TV
The discussion became heated when Howie Mandel and “The X Factor” alum Katie Waissel debated the responsibility reality shows like “The X Factor” bear toward participants, particularly in relation to Liam Payne’s mental health struggles before his tragic death.
The pair appeared on “Piers Morgan Uncensored”, where they delved into the “legal and moral duty” of Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment company, which owns franchises such as “Got Talent” and “The X Factor,” in supporting contestants. Mandel, a judge on the US version of “America’s Got Talent,” and Waissel, who competed on the UK’s “X Factor” Season 7 alongside Payne, offered sharply contrasting views.
Waissel argued that competition shows have a legal and moral obligation to uphold the welfare of their participants. She claimed that during her time on “The X Factor,” the welfare officer provided was “absolutely unqualified beyond measure.” Mandel countered, stating that in his experience, psychologists are available on set to support struggling contestants and that those who face rejection tend to have a more challenging time.
The debate escalated when other panelists, including James Barr, accused Mandel of being biased because of his involvement in the industry. Barr asserted, “You are on the payroll! … The entertainment industry and the shows you work for are also responsible.” Mandel disagreed, insisting that efforts are made to monitor participants’ well-being and provide assistance when necessary.
The conversation became chaotic, with guests frequently interrupting one another. Waissel visibly expressed frustration, especially when Piers Morgan began discussing Payne’s alleged “erratic” behavior and the drug paraphernalia discovered in his room following his death. Piers sided with Mandel, dismissing Waissel by comparing her career unfavorably to One Direction and pointing out that she “came tenth in a reality show.”
The exchange concluded with Waissel emphasizing her call for accountability in the entertainment industry. She stated on social media:
“We must call for investigations into historic cases, especially those that have been silenced by misused non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and confidentiality clauses… Victims deserve to have their voices heard.”
Liam Payne, known for his success with One Direction, died at 31 on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. An autopsy revealed a toxic mix of substances in his system, including “pink cocaine” and other drugs. Investigators are still working to determine whether his fall was accidental or intentional.
Waissel expressed her grief, concluding, “I am here to talk about the tragic loss of our dear friend, Liam.”
