Duchess Meghan is a woman who’s always on the move, but she still makes sure to put her kids first.

While attending the opening of Godmothers—a local bookstore near her and Prince Harry’s home in Montecito, California—Meghan made a passing comment that offered some rare insight to her approach to parenting five-year-old Archie and three-year-old Lilibet.

After speaking at Godmothers’ grand opening event last Saturday, Meghan “made a dash for the door,” Town & Country reported. As the Duchess of Sussex made her stealthy exit, she offered an understandable reason for taking her leave. “Wasn’t that incredible?” she said, adding afterwards, “I’ve got to make dinner for the kids.”

Meghan was among several high-profile figures who helped celebrate the opening of Godmothers, which was launched by literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and cosmetics entrepreneur Victoria Jackson. Harry accompanied Meghan to the shop’s friends and family party on Friday, and Oprah Winfrey headlined the event on Saturday, according to T&C.

Jackson, who has gotten to know the Sussexes since they made their move to California back in 2020, opened up about what it meant to have the couple support her latest endeavor. “Seeing them be able to come here and be in a safe space,” Jackson told the outlet. “it’s what we want it to be…. Their support, and the light that it will shine on Godmothers, is pretty extraordinary.”

The store included a “Local Authors” display, which proudly featured title by both Harry and Meghan: the duke’s 2023 memoir Spare and the duchess’s best-selling children’s book The Bench.

While speaking at Saturday’s event, Meghan expressed her gratitude to the shop’s owners “for not just creating the space, but for holding the space for so many people to feel seen through the pages, either in laughter, in grief, in feeling less alone.”

While Archie and Lili were not present at Godmothers’ opening, it’s clear that Meghan and Harry keep their kids close to their hearts at all times, even during working hours.

For instance, Meghan previously praised daughter Lili while speaking at a women’s empowerment summit in Colombia last month.

“I find inspiration in the strong women around me, of course my mother being one of them,” she said at the time, referencing mom Doria Ragland. “So much of how I approach things is less about the fight, and more about how do we show up in a space and wash things over with love and kindness and generosity…. Those are the elements that inspire me. I know how it feels when you don’t utilize your voice when you need to be heard or have something to say.”

She went on to explain that she raises Lili with those tenets in mind: “I encourage our daughter to do so—who, at three, has absolutely found her voice, and we are so proud of that.”
