Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Donald Trump Calling Him a ‘Winner’ Ahead of Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback said it’s “cool” that the president will be in attendance at the Super Bowl on Sunday

Patrick Mahomes said “it’s cool to hear” that President Donald Trump had praised his abilities on the football field, as the quarterback spoke to media ahead of the 2025 Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs star, 29, was asked Wednesday, Feb. 5 during a pre-game press conference about Trump’s comments earlier this week lauding Mahomes and his past Super Bowl wins.

Trump, who plans to attend the championship game on Sunday, Feb. 9 in New Orleans, had been asked who he thinks will win between Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are seeking a third-straight Super Bowl, and the Philadelphia Eagles, who are hoping for a better result after losing to the Chiefs in 2023.

The president, 78, did not name a team, instead telling reporters, “I don’t want to say, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner.”

Mahomes said Wednesday that he “didn’t see that clip” of Trump, “but obviously, it’s cool to hear that he’s seen me play football and respects the game that I play.”

The dad-of-three was also asked what he thought of Trump coming to watch the Super Bowl, and shared his approval.

“Yeah, I mean it’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone that is at the top position in our country,” Mahomes replied.

His teammate, Travis Kelce, was asked the same question during his press conference Wednesday morning and offered a similar response.

“That’s awesome. It’s a great honor,” Kelce, 35, told reporters, including PEOPLE. “I think you know, no matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there — it’s the best country in the world — and that’s pretty cool.”

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs were made available for interviews during an energetic, New Orleans-themed event ahead of next Sunday's Super Bowl LIX.

Mahomes has previously refrained from commenting on politics, and in September said he would not endorse a candidate before the 2024 presidential election.

“I’ve always said, I don’t want my place or my platform to be used to endorse a candidate either way,” he told reporters at the time. “I think my place is to inform people to get registered to vote, to inform people to do their own research and then make their best decision for them and their family.”

Just before Mahomes’ comments, his wife Brittany had reportedly liked one of Trump’s Instagram posts detailing the “2024 GOP platform” in August, which led to online backlash, along with praise from Trump.

‘It's cool to hear that he's seen me play football and respects the game that I play,’ Mahomes said
