Piers Morgan has once again taken aim at Meghan Markle, this time criticizing her claims of a “near catastrophic” car chase in New York. The incident, which occurred after Meghan and Prince Harry attended the Women of Vision Awards in May 2023, was reported as a harrowing two-hour chase by paparazzi that allegedly put both their safety and that of others at risk. According to a spokesperson for the couple, the pursuit led to near-collisions with pedestrians, other vehicles, and even law enforcement.

However, Piers Morgan, a longtime critic of the Sussexes, was quick to dismiss these claims. Speaking on his show Piers Morgan Uncensored, he questioned the validity of the account, labeling it as exaggerated and misleading. Morgan argued that the couple’s description did not match the realities of New York traffic, which is typically congested, making high-speed chases nearly impossible. He further asserted that the couple’s claims were likely an attempt by Meghan to draw parallels between her experience and the tragic 1997 car crash that killed Princess Diana.

Morgan’s skepticism was echoed by several social media users who also doubted the severity of the chase. While Meghan and Harry’s spokesperson emphasized the danger posed by aggressive paparazzi, others, including the NYPD, painted a different picture. Although the police confirmed that the pursuit was indeed challenging and involved reckless behavior by paparazzi, they stopped short of characterizing it as a catastrophic event. In their statement, the NYPD noted that no injuries, arrests, or significant collisions occurred during the incident.

This controversy has reignited public debate over Meghan and Harry’s strained relationship with the media, particularly in the context of their efforts to shield themselves from the intense press scrutiny that they often face. Morgan, who has frequently criticized the couple for what he perceives as their attention-seeking behavior, suggested that the Sussexes’ choice to remain in the public eye makes them vulnerable to such situations. According to him, their desire for media attention contradicts their complaints about the press invading their privacy.

Morgan’s critique also touched on a broader issue: whether the couple is manipulating their public image. He accused them of playing the victim, particularly Meghan, who has often spoken about the negative media attention she receives. For Morgan and other detractors, this incident further highlights what they see as Meghan’s attempt to evoke sympathy by aligning her experiences with those of Princess Diana.

While the car chase incident certainly divided opinions, it underscored the continuing complexity of Meghan and Harry’s relationship with both the media and the public. Their decision to speak out about the incident, coupled with figures like Morgan voicing their doubts, ensures that the debate surrounding their place in the media spotlight is far from over.
