The Kansas City Chiefs will soon have a new member in the house! The Chiefs have already traded cornerback L’Jarius Sneed this offseason to the Titans. After this move, they had $15.5 million in cap space. And due to having an “extra third-round pick from the Titans for the Sneed trade (alongside two seventh-round picks) as extra draft capital,” the franchise decided to acquire a new member this time.
The linebacker “tallied 40 tackles (20 solo) and three sacks across 32 games” in the last two seasons with his previous team. Now, he will “compete for snaps as a depth defensive end option for the defending champions.” Thomas started his NFL journey with the Cardinals full of promise.
As a standout college career at San Diego State, he racked up impressive stats with, “39 tackles for loss and 21 sacks in four collegiate campaigns.” This helped him to be drafted 87th overall in 2022. Hence, the expectations were high! Although his rookie year showed potential with three sacks, last season was a tough break for the athlete.
Despite seeing plenty of action – 355 defensive snaps and 119 on special teams with Arizona – Thomas struggled to make an impact. He finished the season without a sack and just one quarterback hit. But wait! It’s not like everything wrong happened with the LB. Thomas did have a memorable moment last year too.
He scored the Cardinals’ first touchdown of 2023 by recovering a fumble that caught everyone’s attention. Now, with a fresh opportunity on the horizon, Thomas has a chance to turn things around and prove his worth. So, it remains to be seen what he brings to the table of the Chiefs. Besides Thomas, the Chiefs are reuniting with their old friend after 1 year.
The Chiefs are bringing a piece from the 2022 Super Bowl team?
After two years, JuJu Smith-Schuster is back in Kansas City. The WR led the team in the 2022 Super Bowl, the season in which he caught 78 passes for 933 yards with three touchdowns. However, in the following year, he inked a three-year contract in New England. But the wide receiver couldn’t find his fit in the team, as he struggled with injuries and performance consistency. Hence, he just caught just 29 passes for 260 yards in 11 games, before being released from the Pats earlier this month.
But why did the Chiefs acquire him once again, while knowing his shortcomings? Well, there could be two reasons! One is that Smith-Schuster was a great WR in the 2022 roster of the Chiefs who helped win the Super Bowl in 2023. Second, the Chiefs are dealing with Hollywood Brown’s shoulder injury – it could have prompted them to make this move this late in the process.
Overall, it seems that KC Chiefs are trying to build, acquire, and arm Mahomes and the team from all sides, to ensure no box remains unticked when it comes to increasing their probability of a three-peat.
