Chris Pratt Says He Made a Promise to Be Outspoken About His Faith After God Saved His Son’s Life
A Hollywood Star Who Doesn’t Shy Away from Faith
In today’s entertainment industry, where politics and faith are often seen as controversial topics, few celebrities dare to speak openly about their religious beliefs. However, Chris Pratt is not one of them. The Hollywood actor, known for his roles in Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Endgame, has consistently spoken out about his faith in God, even at the risk of alienating some fans and industry peers.
Pratt’s journey to Hollywood success is an incredible rags-to-riches story that feels almost like divine intervention. At just 19 years old, he was living in a van in Hawaii, working as a waiter at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, with no clear direction in life. One day, fate—or something greater—intervened when a Hollywood director noticed him, leading to his first big break in acting.
“It’s almost too crazy to believe. Why would a director randomly be drawn to a waiter at a chain restaurant? And why, of all places, did this happen in Hawaii? I think about that moment a lot, and it reinforces my belief that God has a plan for all of us.”
While many actors might hesitate to attribute their success to faith, Pratt has never been one to hold back about his spiritual journey—and that commitment became even stronger when he experienced one of the biggest tests of his faith: the premature birth of his son.
A Life-Changing Moment: “God, If You Save My Son, I’ll Give You Everything”
Pratt has always believed in God, but there was one defining moment that truly cemented his faith—the birth of his first son, Jack, in 2012.
Jack was born nine weeks early, weighing just three pounds, and faced serious health complications. He spent a month in the NICU, and during that time, Pratt and his then-wife, actress Anna Faris, were terrified for their baby’s survival.
“The biggest, most profound moment where I really negotiated with God and made promises… because before, I made promises but I didn’t keep them. When my son was born, we really had a health scare with him. I prayed hard to God and I was in a season of transitioning spiritually. At that time, I didn’t quite fully understand the deals I made with God, but I said, ‘I’m sorry, God. Here I am again, asking for your grace.’”
The moment of desperation led Pratt to make a life-altering vow:
“I said, ‘If you save my son, I will give you everything. I will give you my life. I will give you my platform. I won’t be ashamed to talk about you.’ And He did save my son. That was the moment where I was like, ‘Now it’s cemented. My heart softened, and my faith hardened.’”
After weeks of uncertainty, Jack miraculously pulled through. Though he still faces some minor health challenges, Pratt believes his survival was an act of God.
Being a Light in Hollywood: “I Won’t Be Ashamed”
Many Hollywood stars avoid talking about religion for fear of backlash, but Pratt has made it a personal mission to be a voice for Christianity in the entertainment industry. He acknowledges the risks but refuses to stay silent.
“You take a risk being vocal about anything divisive in entertainment. Religion is divisive, and so is politics. I don’t care enough about politics to take a stance one way or the other at the expense of my career. But I do care enough about Jesus to take a stand, even if it costs me everything.”
For guidance, Pratt says he leans on the Bible, particularly Matthew 5:14, which speaks to him deeply in this season of his life:
“A city on a hill cannot be hidden. I feel like I’m being called to be that city on a hill at this moment in my life.”
Despite the criticism and skepticism he faces for his outspoken beliefs, Pratt remains steadfast. He has often used his platform to share scriptures, encourage others in their faith, and even give public speeches about God’s role in his life.
Raising His Children with Faith as His Priority
Now a father of four, Pratt says his biggest responsibility is to ensure his children grow up knowing and loving God.
“I’m not worried about making another blockbuster. I’m not focused on chasing fame or fortune. My number one mission now is raising my children to know that their father was unashamed of his faith.”
Pratt describes his faith journey as having “foggy seasons”, where he knew God existed but wasn’t always as close to Him as he should have been. However, after his son’s birth, he made a promise that he would never let his faith waver again.
“I’ve always known God was real, without a doubt. I’ve never questioned my faith. But it’s almost like… you know that the sun is real, and you know that it’s there, but some days it’s foggy. I’ve had a lot of foggy seasons in my life, from a young age all the way through. But now, I want my kids to see a father who is consistent in his faith.”
Pratt says he stays grounded in his faith by being in constant prayer and immersing himself in scripture.
Facing Backlash and Responding with Prayer
In a world where celebrities are often criticized for expressing religious beliefs, Pratt has faced his fair share of negative reactions. However, instead of responding with anger or frustration, he chooses to pray for those who criticize him.
“I don’t engage in arguments. I don’t try to convince people who don’t want to be convinced. I just pray for them. That’s all I can do.”
Despite the backlash, he remains one of the few major Hollywood figures who isn’t afraid to stand firm in his convictions.
“Some people might not like it, and that’s fine. But if my story, my testimony, helps even one person come closer to God, then it’s worth it.”
A Hollywood Star Who Stands Apart
At a time when many celebrities shy away from religion, Chris Pratt is different. His story—from a struggling teenager in Hawaii to one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and now, an outspoken man of faith—is one that continues to inspire millions.
Through his testimony, his resilience, and his unwavering belief in God, Pratt hopes to be a light in Hollywood—and beyond.
“I made a promise to God, and I intend to keep it. I won’t be ashamed.”
