Kamilla Cardoso Eyes Indiana Fever Opportunity After Supporting Angel Reese’s Spotlight

Kamilla Cardoso Eyes Move to Indiana Fever After Limited Role with South Carolina Gamecocks

Sunday Notes: Kamilla Cardoso has arrived in the WNBA - The Next

Kamilla Cardoso, the towering Brazilian center and one of the brightest rising stars in women’s basketball, has shown interest in joining the Indiana Fever following a season in which she found herself sidelined for much of the time.

The standout from the South Carolina Gamecocks, known for her dominant presence in the paint, played a reduced role last season, as the team focused more on Angel Reese’s impressive performances on the court.

Cardoso’s time on the bench came as a surprise to many fans and analysts. Standing at an imposing 6’7″, she brings a unique combination of shot-blocking ability and rebounding prowess, making her a formidable force in the post. Despite her strong track record, including being named the ACC Freshman of the Year during her time at Syracuse, her playing time was limited last season.

The decision seemed to be a strategic one, as the coaching staff appeared to center the team’s efforts around maximizing Reese’s contributions. Reese, in turn, saw a boost in her opportunities, which led to standout performances and further cemented her status as one of the top forwards in the NCAA. However, this shift in focus took a toll on Cardoso’s development, leaving many to wonder what her future might hold.

Her reported interest in the Indiana Fever appears to be a logical next step. The Fever, one of the most promising and youthful teams in the WNBA, is currently in the midst of rebuilding. With Aliyah Boston, another former South Carolina star, anchoring the roster, the team is focused on strengthening its frontcourt. Cardoso’s size, skill set, and previous experience alongside Boston could make her an ideal addition to their roster.

The presence of Cardoso would give the Fever a powerful twin-tower combination, potentially bringing back memories of dominant interior duos in WNBA history. Moreover, Indiana’s commitment to developing young talent aligns perfectly with Cardoso’s desire for consistent playing time and a chance to prove herself as a star in the league.

Joining the Fever would offer Cardoso an opportunity to display her full range of abilities while earning playing time based on merit, without the constraints of team dynamics or external factors. Her time at South Carolina, where she played both as a starter and a role player, has no doubt contributed to her resilience and growth. If she can carry that experience into her professional career, Cardoso has the potential to become one of the most dominant centers in the WNBA.

In a remarkably short time, Caitlin Clark has made a profound impact on both the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. Drafted No. 1 overall from Iowa, Clark has quickly become a household name, captivating fans with her extraordinary talent.

Her rookie season was nothing short of spectacular. She not only earned the WNBA Rookie of the Year honors but also led the Fever to their first postseason appearance since 2016, further solidifying her place as one of the league’s most exciting newcomers.

As the WNBA season nears in May, Clark remains a highly visible figure in the public eye, frequently attending major events around Indianapolis. From Colts and Pacers games to other high-profile occasions, Clark continues to make her presence felt. On Thursday night, she added another notable appearance to her growing list of public engagements.

Accompanied by her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery – an assistant coach at Butler and former Iowa basketball player – Clark was spotted at the Indy Ignite’s volleyball game, marking the second-ever match for the newly-formed professional indoor volleyball team.

The Fever shared the moment on social media, posting, “Caitlin Clark is supporting Indy’s new pro volleyball team Indy Ignite tonight.”

The Indy Ignite secured their first win of the season on Saturday, and followed it up with another victory on Thursday night, improving to a perfect 2-0 in the early stages of their expansion into the league.

What made the win even more significant was the fact that it took place in front of arguably Indiana’s most popular athlete—Caitlin Clark—further enhancing the event’s spotlight and the growing excitement around her rising stardom in women’s sports.
