Hold on to your hats, folks—this is truly out of touch! Whoopi Goldberg, a prominent figure on The View, has sparked a wave of controversy after her recent comments about why people would vote for Donald Trump. Speaking on the show, she attempted to explain that the economic struggles many Americans face should not justify voting for Trump. She claimed that people need to understand that “everyone struggles,” including herself. Yes, you heard that right—Whoopi Goldberg, with a reported salary of $8 million a year, insists she knows hardship because she has to work for a living, just like everyone else.
Here’s what went down: Whoopi, who sits on a cushy chair for one hour a day, four days a week, for a paycheck that most of us can only dream of, claimed that if she had all the money in the world, she wouldn’t be on The View. Well, if working an hour a day and taking Fridays off makes you “struggling,” then sign us up!
But the drama doesn’t end there. Whoopi’s comments about those who vote based on their economic struggles, rather than just personal disagreements with a candidate’s personality, came off as deeply insensitive. People don’t have the luxury of voting based on “who’s nicer” when they’re trying to pay for gas, healthcare, or put food on the table for their kids. Yet here’s Whoopi, sitting comfortably, making $8 million annually while telling everyone else to stop complaining.
The outrage doesn’t stop there. The argument that people like Whoopi, Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and others have become so detached from the everyday struggle of the average American was further fueled by the fact that Kamala Harris’s campaign—backed by many of these same celebrities—raised over $1 billion, yet ended up $20 million in debt. Critics point out that much of that money went into celebrity endorsements, but did little to actually connect with voters.
As for the Democratic Party, many feel like they’re failing to read the room. Celebrity endorsements no longer carry the weight they once did, and the gap between the ultra-wealthy and average Americans keeps growing. People are sick of being told how to vote by those who’ve never had to worry about paying rent, buying groceries, or finding affordable healthcare. The political elite doesn’t seem to get it, and, judging by this latest debacle, they likely never will.
