Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, has drawn criticism on social media for the role his wife’s played in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show.

He appears to be unapologetic about his wife’s appearance, and owned it in a recent post on X.

“Armenian men: we’re a little extreme when it comes to family,” the tweet read.

Ohanian was responding to a user on the platform pointing out that while people are attacking him for letting his wife appear to troll her ex, he’s been supportive of her from the beginning while being a bit savage along the way.

The Reddit co-founder wore a D.A.R.E shirt to Williams’ 2019 tennis match against Maria Sharapova. Sharapova received a two-year doping ban by the International Tennis Federation in 2016. Debate over whether it was a playful jab or meant to be personal followed in the days after, similar to Serena Williams’ appearance at the Super Bowl.

These comments appear to stem from what ESPN’s star personality, Stephen A. Smith, said during ‘First Take’ on Monday. Smith commented on Williams appearing as a dancer during the performance by Kendrick Lamar – with her specifically appearing during ‘Not Like Us’ as an apparent jab at Drake, a reported ex of hers from several years ago.

He didn’t understand why she would bother making such a public appearance since she’s been married for the past seven-plus years to Ohanian, not to mention the pair have two children together.

“Well, you could say give her her props but Shannon [Sharpe] brought it up so I’m going there, I’m going to be like this,” Smith told the panel. “If I’m your husband, I’m like, ‘Why are you out there dancin’ and, you know, trollin’ your ex?’”

“If I’m married and my wife is going to join trolling her ex? Go back to his ass ’cause clearly you don’t belong with me,” Smith said. “What you worried about him for and you’re with me? Bye. Bye.”

Williams’ appearance alongside Kendrick Lamar stems from the rap beef between Lamar and Drake. With Williams being a high-profile ex-girlfriend, the appearance made sense for the publicity and fallout alone. Lamar and Drake haven’t seen eye-to-eye for years, and multiple public shots have been made at one another over the last couple of years.

That includes the diss track ‘Not Like Us,’ which was the song that Williams was shown dancing to on the broadcast. Williams was on-screen for just a few moments during the song. Still, it was enough to get the internet going as the latest shot by Lamar at Drake as part of this controversy.
