Influential ESPN host Stephen A. Smith decried the policeman’s behavior as “excessive,” echoing the concern that struck NFL fans after seeing the new footage of Hill getting handcuffed.

The reactions came in waves after the initial shock when the wide receiver was detained on his way to the Miami Dolphins’ Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fans react to Tyreek Hill arrest

Concerns for Hill were two-fold: as a player and a person. Many opinions on social media argued that the cop’s swift kick to his legs in order to pin him to the ground was excessive any way that you look at it.

“Cop seems overly aggressive for a dude who is complying,” said a popular reply to the video on X, formerly Twitter.

“Fame plays no part here. It’s never ok to kick a man in handcuffs,” another user on X said in Hill’s defense.

“Man I’m glad they got this on film,” wrote another fan, who brought up the potential impact on the field from the controversial incident. “Must be a Jags fan. Crazy lawsuit incoming.”

Thankfully, Hill avoided any serious injury and was able to suit up for the game against the Jaguars. While fans wait for more evidence to come out about his driving citation and the policeman’s actions, it seems that the controversial story is far from over.
