Caitlin Clark's Rookie Year Highlighted by Record-Breaking Plays-and...

Caitlin Clark’s rookie season in the WNBA was nothing short of spectacular, marked by shattered records and standout accolades. But amidst the glory, the Indiana Fever star experienced a harsh initiation into professional basketball that left a lasting impression-her “welcome to the WNBA” moment.

Clark recently shared the gritty details on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, where she recounted the game against the New York Liberty on June 2, 2024“Somebody set a screen on me, and I hit my ear just perfect on the girl where my eardrum popped,”Clark revealed. “It hurt so bad. That was my welcome to the W moment.” The injury, though not bloody, disrupted her hearing for weeks, serving as a stark reminder of the physicality of the league.

The incident occurred during the fourth quarter of what would become a tough 104-68 loss for the Fever at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Trainers rushed to Clark’s side as she grimaced on the bench before heading back to the locker room. Though she missed the remainder of the game, the injury didn’t slow her momentum for long.

Clark explained that the ruptured eardrum, which initially caused significant discomfort, eventually healed without requiring surgery. “It takes months to heal,” she said. “Luckily, it closed on its own, so I was fine.” Despite this setback, Clark’s resilience defined her rookie season as she went on to break the record for most assists in a season, earning her the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year award.

Caitlin Clark’s rookie year: Resilience, records, and recognition

Clark’s achievements didn’t stop there. She was named to her first WNBA All-Star Game and crowned Time’s Athlete of the Year. These accolades underscore her ability to navigate both the challenges and triumphs of her debut season.

Reflecting on her journey, Clark joked about the brutality of her initiation into the league but acknowledged its importance. “It’s part of the game,”she said with a smile.“You get knocked down, but you keep going.”

The moment highlighted not only the physical demands of the WNBA but also the resilience it takes to thrive in one of the toughest leagues in sports. For Clark, it’s just the beginning of a promising career that already has fans and analysts buzzing.
