Hailie Jade Mathers, the daughter of legendary rapper Eminem, has always kept a relatively low profile compared to her famous father. But recently, she revealed a clever—and pretty hilarious—way she managed to hide her pregnancy before the world knew about it, with a little help from her best friend, Brittany Ednie.
The secret was cleverly kept under wraps during a wedding the pair attended just weeks before Hailie’s pregnancy was publicly revealed. On their podcast, Just A Little Shady, Hailie and Brittany spilled the beans on how the pregnancy was kept under wraps in the most unexpected way: by swapping drinks.
Brittany recalled the moment with a touch of humor, explaining how she took on the role of “covering for” her friend without even being asked. “So she was, you know, grabbing a drink, not consuming the drink as a responsible parent does,” Brittany said, laughing. “Whenever people were turned around, she would hand me her drink, and I would chug so it looked as if she was continuously drinking throughout that night.”
In typical best-friend style, Brittany played the role of the responsible partygoer, all in the name of protecting Hailie’s secret. “I’ll defend myself, though, because I never really asked you to do it,” Hailie clarified, “It was like an unspoken thing with our eyes.”
Before Brittany stepped in, Hailie’s now-husband, Evan McClintock, had been tasked with keeping up the charade. However, as Hailie pointed out, Evan wasn’t always around when the situation called for a little beverage sleight of hand. And besides, he wasn’t a fan of the specific drink Hailie had been sipping—lavender lemonade. “It was very specific, like a lavender lemonade, so Evan was like, ‘I don’t want that,’” Hailie explained, “But you were like, ‘Oh, I’ll take some drinks of it.’”
What a trooper! As the two best friends spent the evening fooling everyone around them, little did anyone know that in just a few weeks, the world would learn of Hailie’s pregnancy in the most heartfelt way.
The big reveal came in Eminem’s music video for his new song Temporary, which was released in mid-November. In the video, Hailie presents her dad with a Detroit Lions jersey that reads “Grandpa” on the back, and a sonogram picture of her unborn child. The moment was emotional, as Eminem, known for his tough persona, looked at the jersey in complete awe and joy, clearly overcome with emotion.
Hailie later shared the sonogram image on Instagram, alongside a sweet photo of her and her husband, Evan. It marked a major milestone for the expecting couple, who had been dating since 2016. Evan proposed in 2023, and the couple tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in May 2024.
Eminem, who has always been fiercely protective of his daughter, also became a father figure to Alaina, Hailie’s cousin, whom he adopted as a child, as well as Stevie, Kim Scott’s child from another relationship. As his only biological child with ex-wife Kim Scott, Hailie’s pregnancy announcement was a significant and personal moment for the rapper.
