DEVASTATED Emma Reid’s Paris Olympics 2024 medal hopes were left in ruins after she lost to South Korea’s Yoon Hyun-ji in the first round of the judo -78kg event.

Reid, 29, was being unprofessional while being interviewed by the BBC after being disqualified following three penalties.

Following her exit, Reid was asked about why Team GB’s judo stars have “under-performed” at this summer‘s Games.

When it was suggested that their build-up may not have been right, she said: “I think we had a really good preparation.

“We were at home, we went away for a camp. I just think it’s tough – especially when a few of us, it’s our first Games.

“We’re not seeded so you can get anyone first fight.

“I’ve beaten her (Yoon) before so it’s frustrating that I could have got to the next round but I think we all felt good going into it.

“Sometimes it doesn’t happen on the day.”

Reid was then asked what she will be up to now.

She replied: “I’ll reflect on the competition… I’m just upset I couldn’t make a better day of it.

“But rest and decompress from everything. It’s been a tough three years, four years – my life really.

“I’m just proud of myself for getting to this point…”

Reid then broke down in years, clutching her face with her hand and wiping away tears.

She then continued through the emotion: “I’m just going to rest up and go again.”

The reporter attempted to console her by saying: “You’re an Olympian, no one can take that away from you.”

But some fans watching at home felt that the line of questioning had been harsh, so soon after her devastating defeat.

‘EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ANYONE?

One wrote: “I am pretty appalled by the @BBC interview of Emma Reid @BritishJudo.

“The quite obvious subtext of “Why were you so rubbish…” was simply unkind journalism and resulted in a talented and dedicated sportswoman being left in tears.

“@BBCSport should deliver an individual apology.”

While a second fumed: “@BBCSport journalist to Emma Reid who has just been disqualified in her first round Judo match – ‘why do you think we have underperformed so much in judo this Olympics?’.

“Cue Emma Reid in tears 30 seconds later. Well done @BBCSport.”

A third asked: “Emotional intelligence anyone?”

Yesterday, Reid’s Team GB colleague Luke Greenbank was also left devastated after being disqualified from the 200m backstroke.

Greenback, 26, swam the fastest time in the heats and thought that he had booked a spot in the semi-finals.

But he was left with his head in his hands after a video replay saw him disqualified for being underwater beyond the 15-metre mark at the start.
