M.I.A. signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in May 2012, right before the release of her fourth album, Matangi. She claims that Jay-Z’s first directive was for her to undergo plastic surgery, which she refused.
“I met Jay-Z, and I signed to Roc Nation. The first thing he told me to do was get plastic surgery. I’m not insecure, because if I were, I would have done it,” M.I.A. revealed.
Her contract with Roc Nation ended in December 2013 after alleged creative differences and label interference. The label reportedly delayed her album release multiple times, asking her to make it “darker,” arguing that they had built her up as a “public enemy.”

M.I.A. also accused Jay-Z of collaborating with her ex-partner, Benjamin Bronfman, to make her custody battle for their son difficult. She shared that she has been struggling to obtain a U.S. visa to visit her child.
“Biden won’t let me see my child. The longest processing time is meant to be two months, and it’s already been longer than that. I have to wait until a Republican wins. Wow,” she wrote on social media.
She further alleged that her son was vaccinated against her wishes by Aurora James, a friend of Beyoncé and Solange, as a deliberate act to provoke her.
