Clark’s inaugural season was nothing short of sensational, averaging 19.5 points, 8 assists, and making a significant impact on the court. Not only did she lead the league in assists, but she also set several records, including the most points scored in a rookie season and the most assists in a single season. Additionally, Clark achieved the remarkable feat of recording two triple-doubles, a milestone that no other rookie has accomplished in WNBA history.

To help us unpack the magnitude of Clark’s achievements, we are joined by Hall of Famer Rebecca Lobo. “Malika, this season by Caitlin Clark is one of the best rookie seasons we’ve ever seen in the WNBA,” Lobo noted. Her statistics speak for themselves, as she boasts the fifth-highest assists per game average in league history. Remarkably, Clark is only the second rookie ever to lead the league in assists, following in the footsteps of Tisha Penner, who did so back in 1998.

Clark’s accomplishments extend beyond individual records. Lobo highlighted that only two other rookies have ever finished in the top four of MVP voting: Candace Parker, who won the MVP in 2008, and Diana Taurasi, who finished third in 2004. This year, Clark finished an impressive fourth in the MVP race, underlining her exceptional impact on the game.

But it’s not just about the statistics; Caitlin Clark has also been a transformative figure for the WNBA in terms of popularity and marketability. Lobo remarked, “There’s not been another singular force like Caitlin Clark in terms of driving TV ratings and ticket sales. She has been must-see TV all season long.” The excitement surrounding Clark’s performances has generated significant interest, demonstrating her potential to elevate the league to new heights.

However, despite her remarkable achievements, some fans anticipated that Clark would become the sixth-ever unanimous Rookie of the Year. Ultimately, she fell just one vote short of that honor. When asked about this, Lobo expressed that she wasn’t surprised, noting the diversity of opinions among the 67 voters. “Angel Reese had a terrific season as well, and this rookie class overall was outstanding,” she explained. The competition was fierce, particularly among the top three rookies: Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Rhea Jackson, all of whom have left a significant mark on the league.

Lobo compared this rookie class to some of the most celebrated in WNBA history, referencing the 2004 class featuring Diana Taurasi, Elena Beard, and Lindsay Whalen, as well as the 2006 class with Simone Augustus and Candace Parker. “When you look at what these players accomplished, it’s evident that this year’s class is among the best in the history of the league,” she added.

Looking forward, the future appears bright for Caitlin Clark. With her incredible talent and influence on and off the court, it is exciting to think about where her career will go from here. As Lobo noted, “When we look back on this in a couple of years, it’s going to hold up to the test of time.”
