Adam Levine hilariously talks about Blake Shelton’s return to The Voice and their ‘strange’ relationship amid behind-the-scenes drama

In a new clip premiering exclusively on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Maroon 5 frontman watches and reacts to clips from his 16-season run on the show from 2011 to 2019.

In the video, Levin, 45, watched the iconic moments on a laptop, beginning with his victory on season 1 with Javier Colon.

“That’s crazy. It brings back a lot of memories. Back then, when the show started, we really didn’t know what to expect. There was no institution of The Voice. It wasn’t a thing. It was brand new,” the “She Will Be Loved” singer says.

“I remember when I heard Javier sing, I thought to myself, ‘That guy makes all of it make sense,’ like why I’m doing it. Because he was so good. It was just a emotional moment,” he continues. “And to have won the first season the The Voice… they can’t ever take that away from you. It’s pretty cool.”

He then watched the moment Tessanne Chin won season 1 in December 2013.

“Tessanne Chin, it’s like you felt like the whole country was watching and it was just this really special event. It feels so good to feel like you’ve really been a part someone’s run to the end of this thing… I’ll never forget Tessanne. I love her. She made me laugh,” he says of Chin, jokingly adding: “I think she thought I was crazy in a good way.”

In the next clip, Levine won yet again on season 9 with Jordan Smith. In his reflection, the “Sunday Morning” artist recalls thinking Smith was “one of the best singers I’ve ever heard in my life.”

“That was a really special one because he’s so unbelievable. And I don’t know if The Voice before or after that has ever had anybody as great as Jordan. I believe that,” he says.

The theme of the clips then took a turn. Levine is shown standing on his chair on multiple occasions, hoping to convince contestants to join his team: “I’m so crazy,” he quips.

“So thirsty. What’s wrong with me? Like, seeing this is tripping me out. I have never seen this,” he says. “What are you gonna embarrass me with now?”

The final clip sees Levine conduct his own blind audition in 2015. He sang Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” and then-coaches Pharrell Williams, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton turned their chairs.

In his commentary, Levine opened up about his relationship with Shelton, who left the show in May 2023 after 23 seasons.

“Blake Shelton, wow. Hate him. There’s only one question since day one of shooting The Voice that I am ever asked… not on the music, not what was your inspiration behind writing ‘She Will Be Loved,’ nothing cool. The only question that anyone ever asks me is ‘What is Blake like?’ And I hate it. Love him though. No, sorry, hate him,” he quips.

He concludes, “So that was me just talking about myself. Thanks for hanging out with me today, guys. Don’t miss an all-new season of The Voice on NBC. It’s going to be awesome. Blake isn’t on it.”
