Caitlin Clark Shines Bright Amid Rookie of the Year Debate: Historic Performances Underscore Her Case

Caitlin Clark had the perfect response to pundits believing Angel Reese deserved Rookie of the Year over the Indiana Fever star, posting historic numbers in back-to-back games

Caitlin Clark made sure to leave no doubt that she should be the 2024 Rookie of the Year.

Despite Clark’s historic run with the Indiana Fever this season and in recent weeks, ESPN still claimed Chicago Sky star Angel Reese was ahead of her in the Rookie of the Year standings. The outlet noted that a handful of advanced metrics had Reese ahead of Clark, which led to the forward being ahead of the star guard.

Seemingly in response to those claims, Clark responded in a way only she could: By playing her best basketball of the season. Against Reese and the Sky, the Indiana Fever rookie put up a career-high 31 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, 5 of 9 from 3-point land, 12 assists, four rebounds and one steal in the 100-81 blowout win.

At one point, Clark appeared to have gotten a standing ovation, despite playing in Chicago, as she walked to the bench at the end of the game. Two days later, Clark continued her dominant run to the Rookie of the Year award, leading the Fever to a 100-93 win over the Dallas Wings

In the win, Clark scored 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, dished out 12 assists, grabbed four rebounds and had one steal in the win. More impressively, Clark became the first rookie in NBA and WNBA history to have back-to-back games with 25 or more points, 10 or more assists and five or more 3-pointers made.

She also notched the most double-doubles by a guard in a single season in WNBA history. Considering how frequently Clark is breaking records, even NBA legend LeBron James had to acknowledge what the rookie is doing.

“Caitlin Clark!!!! Hi Haters,” James posted on X after seeing Clark and the Fever defeat the Sky. And although she showed out against Reese and the Sky as well as the Wings, Clark made it a point to explain that winning Rookie of the Year was something she did not pay attention to.

Before the Fever’s demolition of the Sky, Clark told reporters that she did not care for individual accolades. Instead, she would rather focus on her team’s success and making the playoffs than any singular award.
