Ex-49ers LB Patrick Willis tells Robert Griffin III…

In a recent interview with Robert Griffin III, former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis revealed his strong preference for 2012 quarterback Colin Kaepernick over 2024’s Brock Purdy, sparking a fresh debate among football fans. Willis, a key figure in the 49ers’ defense during Kaepernick’s groundbreaking 2012 season, explained that the dual-threat capabilities of Kaepernick, combined with his leadership and poise during critical moments, made him the more dynamic choice.

Kaepernick’s meteoric rise in 2012, which culminated in a Super Bowl appearance, was a game-changer for the NFL. His unique combination of a cannon arm and elite mobility on the ground set him apart from most quarterbacks of his era, and Willis believes that Kaepernick’s ability to dominate both through the air and with his legs would give him the edge over Purdy.

While Purdy has been exceptional for the 49ers in the 2024 season, guiding the team to impressive wins, Willis pointed out that Kaepernick’s physical tools, particularly his ability to extend plays and take off on designed runs or scrambles, made him a more dangerous and unpredictable quarterback in high-pressure situations. Kaepernick’s performance in the 2012 playoffs, where he led the 49ers to the NFC Championship and nearly claimed the Super Bowl, remains one of the most memorable and impressive runs by a quarterback in recent history.

Purdy, however, has proven himself to be a steady and reliable leader in his own right, operating within a system that maximizes his strengths and minimizes mistakes. His calm demeanor and ability to make smart decisions have contributed to the 49ers’ strong performance, but Willis believes Kaepernick’s raw talent and electrifying playstyle would have elevated the 49ers even further.

While both quarterbacks have made their mark in different eras, Willis’ comments underline the unique skill set that Kaepernick brought to the table. It’s a comparison that reflects not only the changing landscape of NFL quarterback play but also the ongoing conversation about what makes a quarterback truly great—whether it’s raw athleticism, leadership, or consistency under pressure.
