Hoda Kotb’s Unexpected Absence from Today—Sheinelle Jones Steps In and Fans Are Wondering Why

Fans of the Today show were greeted with an unexpected change on Tuesday when Sheinelle Jones took over hosting duties in the absence of Hoda Kotb.

Stepping up to the challenge alongside co-anchor Peter Alexander,

Sheinelle reassured viewers that she would do her best to honor Hoda’s role, promising, “I’ll try to make her proud.”

The show’s regular hosts, Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, were both missing from the broadcast, though no formal explanation was given for their absence.

However, with many of the Today show hosts taking time off during the summer, it’s not unusual for the lineup to see temporary shake-ups.

Sheinelle Jones Takes the Lead

Having filled in for her colleagues before, Sheinelle appeared comfortable in the role and determined to maintain the show’s engaging dynamic. As she and Peter led the broadcast, Sheinelle’s commitment to doing Hoda justice was evident. Viewers quickly took to social media to praise her ability to step into the role seamlessly and maintain the energy and professionalism that Today is known for.

Though the reason for Hoda’s absence was not explicitly stated, it is likely due to the ongoing summer vacation schedules among the show’s anchors. In recent months, several Today hosts have taken well-deserved breaks, making room for their co-hosts to step in temporarily.

Hoda Kotb’s Recent Birthday Celebration

Hoda’s time off comes shortly after she celebrated a significant milestone—her 60th birthday. The Today team made sure to mark the occasion with a touching tribute that left the beloved anchor emotional.

During the special segment, Hoda was treated to a montage of memorable moments from her career, including some of the most heartfelt and impactful interviews she has conducted over the years. The video compilation not only celebrated her professional achievements but also highlighted her kindness, compassion, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Savannah Guthrie, in particular, had moving words for her co-host, saying, “We are a wonderful village that works with you every day, and we know you, our friend, our partner. We love her so much. And many, many other people are right there with us—they adore you too.”

The tribute featured clips of Hoda’s interviews with individuals whose stories have left a lasting impact, reminding everyone of the powerful storytelling she brings to the show. Overcome with emotion, Hoda thanked her colleagues, saying, “This is the best birthday. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Hoda Reflects on Turning 60

Leading up to her birthday, Hoda shared her thoughts on reaching this new milestone and what it means to her. She expressed gratitude for the personal and professional growth she has experienced over the years, stating, “I feel like I’m a better version, or more myself, each year I grow older.”

She reflected on how, as people age, they often become more comfortable in their own skin, embracing their true selves. “I think a lot of times we spend our time pretending—being someone we’re not. After a while, you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m me. God made me this way.’”

Looking back on her 50s, Hoda described them as some of the best years of her life, especially because they brought her the joy of motherhood. She adopted her two daughters, Haley and Hope, during this period, and she believes that her 60s will be even more fulfilling. “In my 50s, I got my children, I got the job I dreamt of, I found out who I was myself. Finally, I feel like I’m 100% me.”

Looking Toward the Future

When asked about what she hopes for in this next chapter of her life, Hoda emphasized her desire to give back and make a difference. “The first part of your life is about learning, the second part of your life’s about earning, and the third part is about service and giving back. I feel like this is an important time that’s coming for me.”

Though she took some time off following her birthday, Hoda is expected to return to the Today show soon. Until then, Sheinelle Jones and other Today co-hosts will continue holding down the fort, ensuring that the morning show remains as engaging and inspiring as ever.
