Lara Trump Removes Herself from Consideration for Marco Rubio’s Senate Seat
Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, announced on Saturday that she is no longer pursuing consideration for Florida Republican Marco Rubio’s U.S. Senate seat. Her decision comes after weeks of speculation and discussions about her potential political future.
“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” Lara Trump shared in a post on X.
The announcement followed news that Marco Rubio, the current senator for Florida, has been nominated by the president-elect to serve as secretary of state. Rubio’s move to the cabinet leaves his Senate seat open, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis responsible for appointing a temporary replacement to serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
Lara Trump expressed gratitude for the support she has received during her tenure as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). “I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime. I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida,” she added.
Having recently stepped down from her RNC leadership role earlier this month, Lara Trump also hinted at future plans, saying, “I have read so many of your kind messages and I cannot thank you enough. I have a big announcement that I’m excited to share in January.” She reiterated her dedication to public service and expressed optimism about serving the country again in the future.
In her statement, Lara Trump wished Governor DeSantis the best of luck with his decision on Rubio’s replacement. The president-elect had previously encouraged DeSantis to appoint Lara to the seat but later remarked that the choice was ultimately up to the governor.
A source close to Trump’s political circle revealed that while there had been initial pressure from the president-elect to consider Lara for the role, he downplayed expectations in recent comments to reporters. “That’s his choice,” Trump said, referring to DeSantis’s decision.
Rubio’s Senate seat is set to be filled temporarily by the governor’s appointment, with an election scheduled in 2026 for a full six-year term. Lara Trump had earlier indicated that she was “seriously considering” the position but noted uncertainty about whether it was the right path for her at this time.
Governor DeSantis is expected to announce his decision on Rubio’s replacement by early January. Meanwhile, Lara Trump’s statement closes a chapter of speculation regarding her immediate political ambitions while leaving open the possibility of future involvement in public service.
