A Holiday Makeover

My Mother-in-Law Gave Me Money to Get a Holiday Makeover, But the Truth Left Me Bitter

It’s true—no matter how hard you try, a daughter-in-law will never be seen as real family.

A Rocky Beginning

I grew up in a small town but have been living in a big city for almost a decade, working hard to build my life. At 27, I was still single, but by 28, I was introduced to my now-husband by my cousin. After dating for a while, we got married, and I moved in with his family.

It was my first marriage, but it was his second. He had been married for nearly five years before divorcing his ex-wife due to irreconcilable differences. Early on in our relationship, he was honest about his past, reassuring me I didn’t need to worry about his ex. She had moved far away with their child, and they only occasionally met to catch up.

His ex-wife even sent us a gift and flowers for our wedding. She seemed polite and civilized, with no signs of wanting to interfere in our lives. I felt at ease.

However, there was something odd from the very beginning. Since my husband’s family lived in the city and mine in a rural area, the wedding arrangements on my end were festive and traditional. When I arrived at my husband’s house, there was no sign of celebration—no tent, no decorations, no neighbors gathered to welcome the bride. The street and house looked just as they did on any other day.

When I asked about it later, my husband explained that his parents wanted to keep things low-key. They were conscious of appearances and didn’t want neighbors gossiping about his second marriage. The first wedding had been grand and public, but this time they chose quiet discretion.

Two months into our marriage, I felt like a stranger in my husband’s home. His parents hadn’t introduced me to their neighbors, and I rarely interacted with anyone in the area. One day, my mother-in-law gave me $40 and insisted I get a haircut and color for the holidays. She recommended a chic short cut and a subtle brown shade, which I found quite stylish. I hesitated at first, but her persistence convinced me.

After spending hours at the salon, I returned home feeling fresh and happy. My mother-in-law seemed pleased, and even my husband complimented me. At work, my coworkers praised the new look, boosting my confidence.

The Bitter Truth

The day after, I left work early and decided to treat the family to a special dinner. As I parked near the house, I overheard my mother-in-law talking on the phone in the living room. She didn’t notice I was there, so I stood outside, listening.

She was on a video call with relatives abroad, chatting casually until my name came up. She praised me for being obedient, hardworking, and polite. Then she mentioned how she had given me money to get my haircut.

But what followed left me stunned. She explained that she wanted me to look like my husband’s ex-wife so the neighbors wouldn’t realize he had remarried. She believed that if I resembled his ex, people would assume he was still married to her, saving the family from unnecessary gossip.

I was shocked and hurt. It felt like, in her eyes, I wasn’t an individual but a stand-in for someone else. Despite knowing the truth, how could she think a mere hairstyle could deceive the neighbors? My husband had shown me photos of his ex-wife—while our hairstyles might now be similar, we looked completely different otherwise.

Hearing this, I felt a wave of disappointment. Did my mother-in-law genuinely care for me, or was I just a tool to protect her family’s image? Her actions, though seemingly kind, now felt calculated and insincere.

The realization left me questioning my place in this family. Am I valued for who I am, or am I just a shadow of the past meant to uphold a façade?
