At 11pm, dad called

At 11pm, my dad called to tell me some news that scared me so much that I quickly begged my brother for help

It was 11 p.m. when my phone buzzed in the stillness of the night. My father’s slurred voice broke through, delivering news that made my heart pound. The fear was so palpable, I instinctively turned to my elder brother for help.

Our family had been strained for years, with my father’s habits being a constant source of tension. His drinking, temper, and relentless demands had made living together unbearable, forcing me to leave the family home and carve out a life with my wife. But even that distance hasn’t freed me from the emotional grip of his behavior.

A Troubled Past Resurfaces

Growing up, my father’s temper ruled our household. He’d lash out at the smallest provocation, his words cutting deep. My mother endured decades of this, her resilience remarkable yet heartbreaking. As I got older, I knew I had to escape the cycle.

When I married, my wife and I moved into our own home—a space we fought hard to secure. She contributed money, I saved every penny I could, and we borrowed from the bank to finally call a place our own. It was our sanctuary, but it wasn’t immune to my father’s reach.

Calls demanding money came frequently. “A few hundred here, a little more there,” he’d say, though I knew it would go to his drinking. Initially, I complied, but my wife soon found out. Pregnant and emotional, she confronted me, accusing me of prioritizing my father over our family. Her tears and silence were harder to bear than my father’s scolding.

When my father had a minor accident—yet another result of his drinking—I sent money for his treatment. But even this strained my relationship with my wife. Her resentment grew, and so did my guilt.

The Breaking Point

After my son was born, I thought having a grandson might soften my father’s ways. Instead, his drinking worsened. He’d insist on holding the baby while drunk, his alcohol-laden breath making my wife recoil. When she refused, he’d lash out, calling her disrespectful.

Two weeks into staying at my father’s house post-delivery, my wife snapped. She packed our belongings, insisting we return to our own home. My father, furious, accused me of being weak and controlled by my wife. His words cut deep, but I knew I couldn’t subject my wife or son to his wrath any longer.

The Midnight Call

Then came the midnight call. My father, drunk as always, declared he wanted to spend the upcoming holiday season at my house, away from his drinking buddies. He spoke of bonding with his grandson, but I knew the reality: chaos, arguments, and inevitable heartbreak.

Terrified of what his presence might do to my already fragile family dynamic, I called my elder brother, pleading with him to take our father in for the holidays. My brother agreed, but convincing my father was another battle. When I suggested he stay with my brother, he exploded, calling me ungrateful and accusing me of abandoning him in his old age.

Caught Between Two Worlds

I am trapped. On one side is my father, whose presence threatens to unravel the fragile peace I’ve built with my wife. On the other side is my wife, whose patience has worn thin after years of enduring his behavior.

I’ve tried everything—compromise, diplomacy, even avoidance—but nothing seems to work. My father’s inability to change and my wife’s refusal to tolerate his behavior have left me emotionally drained.

What Comes Next?

As the holidays approach, I’m left wondering how to navigate this impossible situation. Do I risk my marriage to honor my father, or do I protect my family at the expense of his feelings?

The clock ticks on, and I remain torn, haunted by the echoes of that midnight call and the realization that sometimes, love alone isn’t enough to heal the wounds of a fractured family.
