Buckeyes Coach Slammed for Such a Questionable Late-Game Decision Against Top-Five Opponent – Fire incoming?

As the final whistle blew at Ohio Stadium this past Saturday, the scoreboard told a clear story: Ohio State Buckeyes 38, Indiana Hoosiers 15. But the narrative that unfolded in that late fourth quarter has fans and former players engaging in a heated debate over Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day’s tactics.

Former Ohio State player slams Buckeyes head coach, 'I knew Coach Ryan Day was not the answer'

From the outset, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Buckeyes. They found themselves trailing 7-0 early on but quickly turned the tide, asserting their dominance over the Hoosiers for the game’s remainder. By the time the clock was winding down, Ohio State held a comfortable lead—a testament to their on-field prowess.

Enter TreVeyon Henderson, the Buckeyes’ running back, who had a clear shot to the end zone. Opting for strategy over spectacle, Henderson purposefully went down at the 1-yard line to preserve the clock, a smart move given the situation.

Indiana, at that point, had recently scored, attempted a two-point conversion, and tried their luck with an onside kick. The stakes were high and the tension higher.

What followed, though, is where opinions diverged. Instead of taking a knee and running out the clock, Ryan Day decided to let quarterback Will Howard take matters into his own hands—or rather, into the end zone. It wasn’t a one-and-done, as Howard needed two attempts to cross the goal line, ultimately stretching the Buckeyes’ lead to three scores.

This decision sparked a barrage of criticism from certain corners, including former Indiana players and various sports pundits, branding Day’s call as “classless” and accusing him of “running up the score.” Social media was ablaze with commentary, with some fans drawing parallels to past moments of controversial play.

In the midst of the clamor, Ryan Day stood firm, providing his perspective in a post-game interview with FOX. “We said leave no doubt,” Day declared, underscoring his intent to solidify Ohio State’s status without ambiguity. “We wanted to finish it the right way and make sure that everybody knows that this is The Ohio State Buckeyes.”

Let’s take a step back and remember what’s at stake in college football. As teams vie for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff, every touchdown and field goal carries weight beyond the immediate game—a reality more pronounced for programs with playoff aspirations.

So, was it a strategic triumph for Ohio State, or a breach of unwritten sportsmanship codes? In the world of college football, where margins of victory can influence committee decisions, it might just be par for the course. Whatever camp you might fall into, one thing is for certain: in Columbus, the Buckeyes let the nation know they’re here to contend, right down to the final seconds.
