Indiana Fever’s Tough Offseason Choices: Two Players Could Upset Caitlin Clark and the Team’s Future—Is a Major Shakeup Coming?
The Indiana Fever are keen to hold onto one of their own in Kelsey Mitchell.
The 29-year-old two-time All-Star has played in Indiana for all seven seasons of her career, and the team is hoping that continues into next season.
However, with Mitchell set to become a free agent this offseason that might not be the case. While Mitchell has stated she would be happy to remain in Indiana, she hasn’t closed the door on a potential exit in free agency.
The Fever can’t just focus their attention on Mitchell either as guard Erica Wheeler is also without a contract. Once free agency begins in January, she also could say goodbye to the Fever.
Wheeler herself has talked about the matter on social media, noting how fans are messaging her about her future even when she posts about matters that aren’t related to her future with the Fever.
“Hahah I love how I post a tweet and then yall speak on free agency in my dms hahaha,” Wheeler wrote. “like yall Jan and Feb right there. Yall gone know soon!
“Let me beeeee lol dang can I be present in Turkey hooping. Ain’t no W conversations going on right now. Just know ima be on a roster.”
Wheeler more likely to leave?
Given that Wheeler is currently playing in Turkey during the WNBA offseason, safe to say that her mind isn’t solely focused on her future with the Fever.
It’s unclear whether Indiana are keen to bring the 33-year-old back into the fold for another season. In 39 appearances last season she averaged 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 14.0 minutes per contest.
Either way, the Fever have some big decisions on their hand as they try to navigate the offseason as best they can and surround star Caitlin Clark with as many options as possible.
