Philadelphia Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean had an unforgettable birthday as he played a pivotal role in his team’s commanding 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
The young defensive back delivered one of the game’s defining moments, intercepting Patrick Mahomes and returning it for a touchdown. It was his first NFL interception, and he couldn’t have chosen a bigger stage to make it happen.
“I’ve been dreaming of this since I was a kid, watching this game growing up. Now it’s here, and now I get to wear a big old ring on my finger whenever we get it, hold that trophy – it’s amazing,” DeJean said after the game.
The moment DeJean picked off Mahomes and sprinted toward the end zone, Eagles fans erupted, with chants filling the stadium as he crossed the goal line. The excitement of the moment wasn’t lost on the rookie.
“It’s awesome. To hear that chant, to be able to score a touchdown, is pretty cool,” DeJean said.
“I’m just happy to be here and be a part of this organization. We’ve got a great fanbase, and they support us all the way through the ups and downs. I know they’re back home partying on Broad Street right now.”
While the defensive back was soaking in the victory, he received an unexpected message from a high-profile Chiefs fan-WNBA star Caitlin Clark.
Caitlin Clark’s Message to DeJean
During an interview on the Up & Adams Show, DeJean shared that Clark reached out to congratulate him on the Eagles’ victory, despite her loyalty to Kansas City.
“She sent me a nice message congratulating me, so that was nice of her being a Chiefs fan and all,” DeJean said.
Clark, who made history as one of the most dominant college basketball players before entering the WNBA, may have had her own remarkable year, but DeJean now holds a different kind of honor – a Super Bowl ring.
With both athletes making waves in their respective sports, their connection as Iowa stars remains a unique bond-even if they’re now on opposite sides of the sports rivalry.
