Fox News enjoyed an exceptional year in 2022. Throughout the year, with the help of Dan Bongino, its cable programs, especially those hosted by Greg Gutfeld and Tucker Carlson, significantly outperformed competitors, particularly among younger viewers. Additionally, Fox News’ digital division thrived, outperforming both progressive online outlets and other conservative news platforms.
Dan Bongino also contributed to Fox News’ success. According to a recent Ad Week report, Bongino’s Saturday night show emerged as the most-watched program in primetime, decisively surpassing CNN and MSNBC.
Bongino’s show, which airs at 9 pm EST, attracted an impressive 1.19 million viewers. In contrast, CNN’s show in the same time slot drew just 219,000 viewers, while MSNBC’s audience was slightly higher at 315,000.
Bongino also excelled in the critical 25-54 demographic, averaging 134,000 viewers, compared to CNN’s 58,000 and MSNBC’s 27,000.
Fox News’ dominance was not limited to Bongino’s show. Brian Kilmeade’s 8 pm EST program also performed well, drawing around 1.06 million viewers, although slightly fewer than Bongino. CNN’s 8 pm show attracted 282,000 viewers, and MSNBC drew about 340,000.
This strong performance underscores Fox News’ continued success in the cable news landscape. According to Fox Media Relations, December 2022 marked Fox News Channel’s seventh consecutive year as the top cable news network, achieving the third-highest ratings in cable news history for 2022. The network continued to set new records, remaining the leading cable network in both primetime and total day viewership for the seventh year running and securing its position as the highest-rated cable news network for the 21st year in a row.
In primetime, Fox News averaged 2,330,000 total viewers, with 346,000 in the 25-54 demographic and 214,000 in the 18-49 demographic. For total day viewership, Fox News was the only network to show an increase from 2021, delivering 1,489,000 total viewers, 231,000 in the 25-54 demographic, and 141,000 in the 18-49 demographic. Fox News outperformed CNN and MSNBC combined in all categories, becoming the only cable news network to surpass 2 million primetime viewers and 1 million total day viewers.
Throughout 2022, Fox News had 92 of the top 100 cable news shows. CNN and MSNBC, meanwhile, experienced their lowest ratings ever in the total day and younger 25-54 demographic. Nielsen/MRI Fusion data also revealed that Fox News attracted the most politically diverse audience among cable news networks, with more Democrats, Independents, and Republicans tuning in compared to its competitors. In total day viewership for the 25-54 demographic, Fox News held its second-highest audience share in history at 53%, and secured 55% of the primetime audience.
