A longtime USC employee needed medical attention Sunday at Colonial Life Arena just before the start of the second quarter of the South Carolina-Auburn women’s basketball game.
Mac Credille, who has worked in various different positions in the South Carolina athletics department since 1977, fell while cleaning the floor during the break between the first and second quarters, according to eyewitnesses.
Credille was helped up and returned to a seat under the basket, then received medical attention from South Carolina’s staff. USC head coach Dawn Staley left the Gamecocks bench area to walk over and check on Credille before play resumed.
He did not return to the sidelines and was taken to the hospital, according to eyewitnesses.
“Mac is family,” Staley said. “I’ve known Mac for 17 years now. I just caught the end of it. I think he fell. And I think he was a little wobbly on his feet. When I went over to him he seemed OK, but our medical staff thought it would be a good idea for him to get checked out. So I think he went over to the hospital and I’ll get a further checkup after I leave here.”
Credille has been a fixture of the South Carolina athletics department for over 50 years. He served as an equipment manager and retired in 2018. The Gamecocks honored his service to the department at a men’s basketball game in 2019, and there’s still a scholarship given annually in his name.
Despite that retirement, Credille can still be spotted helping out at basketball games in Colonial Life Arena.
