Gabby Williams delivered a standout performance in the Paris Olympics women’s basketball final, leading France in a closely contested match against Team USA.
Although France narrowly missed out on gold with a 67-66 loss, Williams was the undisputed star, contributing 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Her extraordinary effort on the court has sparked widespread admiration and reignited conversations about her potential return to the WNBA.
Williams, who was born in the United States but represents France internationally, showcased her ability to perform under immense pressure.
Her stellar play in the final highlighted not only her scoring prowess but also her versatility and defensive skills.
Fans and analysts alike have taken notice, with many calling for the power forward to make a comeback to the WNBA, where she previously played for the Chicago Sky and Seattle Storm.
Despite her success on the international stage, Williams has faced challenges balancing her commitments between the WNBA and overseas leagues.
The WNBA’s prioritization rule, which requires players to prioritize their WNBA commitments over other leagues, has been a point of contention for Williams.
In a previous interview, she expressed her frustration, stating, “I still think the prioritization thing is ridiculous… Something has to give. France needs to have shorter seasons, or the WNBA needs to [allow players] to make money and do both.”
The prioritization rule has led to complications for players like Williams, who seek to maintain their careers in both the WNBA and international leagues.
This rule was designed to ensure that WNBA players are available for the entirety of the league’s season, but it has also forced some players to make difficult choices about where they can play and when.
Talisa Rhea open to Williams return
Seattle Storm‘s General Manager, Talisa Rhea, has acknowledged the situation and expressed a willingness to bring Williams back to the WNBA when the time is right.
“We’ll definitely have conversations with Gabby when we can… She was great while she was here, so hopefully we can continue those conversations,” Rhea said, hinting at the possibility of Williams rejoining the league in the near future.
Williams‘ talent has not gone unnoticed by her peers either. Team USA’s A’ja Wilson, who played against Williams in the Olympic final, praised her performance, particularly her ability to hit difficult shots in critical moments.
“Gabby hit some great shots down the end, tough shots,” Wilson said, underscoring the respect Williams commands on the court.
As Williams reflects on her Olympic journey, the buzz around her potential WNBA return continues to grow.
Her ability to excel on the world stage has only strengthened her reputation as one of the most versatile and respected players in the game today.
