Had to “run away”

I worked as a maid for my sister-in-law’s house for only 3 months but it was “too much” I had to “run away”

I worked as a housekeeper for my sister-in-law for just three months before a shocking incident forced me to quit in a panic.

Sisters squabble over 'missed call' etiquette

My sister-in-law is a successful and wealthy woman who pays generously. She offered me $3,000 a month for relatively light work, which was four times what I earned as a cashier. The pay was too good to pass up. Although her house is enormous, it’s equipped with modern appliances that made cleaning easy. My main responsibilities were tidying her bedroom, cooking, and maintaining her beautiful garden.

When I started, I was amazed by her lavish lifestyle. At 33, she’s single, stunning, and fiercely independent. She lives in a sprawling mansion with luxurious furnishings, closets filled with designer clothes and shoes, and beauty products lined up like a high-end boutique. Her life seemed like something out of a movie. She hosted extravagant parties, sometimes spending thousands of dollars in one evening—amounts that could cover another person’s rent for months.

But behind the glamour, I soon realized there was a side of her life that made me deeply uncomfortable. My sister-in-law’s personal life was as bold as her spending habits. She had a new man in her life nearly every week and didn’t hesitate to bring them home. It wasn’t uncommon to hear her laughter echoing through the house late at night or to see unfamiliar men lounging in the living room the next morning.

One of the most uncomfortable experiences was seeing men walking around the upper floors half-dressed—or worse. At first, I tried to avoid these situations, telling myself it wasn’t my place to judge her choices. But one evening, something happened that I couldn’t ignore.

I was in the kitchen preparing dinner when one of her boyfriends—a man I had never seen before—walked in. At first, I thought he needed something, so I politely asked if I could help. To my shock, he suddenly grabbed me, pulling me into an unwanted embrace. I tried to push him away, but he laughed and told me I was “just the help” and that I should be grateful for his attention.

I was terrified and managed to break free after threatening to scream. My heart was racing, and I couldn’t focus for the rest of the night. I avoided any interaction with him or my sister-in-law and spent the night in my room, replaying the incident in my mind. The next morning, I decided I couldn’t continue working in her home.

When I handed in my resignation, my sister-in-law was confused and begged me to stay. She offered me even more money, gifts, and even bought clothes for my children to entice me to return. She had no idea what had happened, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell her. How could I explain that one of her casual flings had crossed a line and made me feel unsafe in her home?

Now, I’m torn about what to do. Should I tell her the truth about why I left? Should I confront her about her lifestyle and ask her to be more mindful of the people she allows into her home? I worry she won’t take me seriously or, worse, blame me for the incident.

I know she means well and genuinely cares about me and my family, but her recklessness has left me shaken. I’m still struggling with how to handle this situation while protecting myself and maintaining a good relationship with her. What would you do in my place? Should I speak up, or is it better to stay silent and move on?
