White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called out a reporter for “making a face” during an awkward press conference on Tuesday. The comment came as Leavitt was talking about Trump’s ongoing spat with Canada over tariffs and a threat made to cut electricity to parts of America.
“To the woman in the purple cause I saw you were making a face at my previous answer,” Leavitt said to which the bemused reporter responded, “Oh did I?”
“What’s going on,” Leavitt asked. The reporter then stated she had a “couple of questions.” In short, the reporter asked that “at the core, the pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses and elsewhere is a demand to end the war in Gaza and is a goal that this administration actually supports and pursued.”

“So why has this not been acknowledged or highlighted,” she finished. Leavitt quickly responded saying that the flyers were Hamas propaganda and that the flyers were distributed allegedly “promoted violence.”

Leavitt also claimed that the flyers had the “logo of an organization that has held Americans hostage, that murdered innocent babies, that murdered men, women and children.” (Image: AFP via Getty Images)
Leavitt ended her statement by saying that Secretary Marco Rubio exercised his authority and that they “fully believe that we are going to move forward with more arrests.”
The moment comes after Leavitt warned there would be “grave consequences” for Canada “if they think about shutting off electricity for the United States of America and our citizens.”

Her comments come amid the trade war that’s been brewing between the U.S. and Canada after Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on aluminum and steel from Canada beginning on Monday, double the originally planned tariffs.
The move prompted Ontario Premier Doug Ford to implore Trump to “stop the chaos” as he added that Canada “will not back down.” He also said he would “not hesitate to shut off electricity completely.”

“We will be relentless,” Ford stated. In a previous statement, he said: “President Trump’s tariffs are a disaster for the U.S. economy. They’re making life more expensive for American families and businesses.”
Ontario currently provides power to about 1.5 million American homes in Minnesota, Michigan and New York. “Until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario won’t back down. We’ll stand strong, use every tool in our toolkit, and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario,” Ford added.
Despite Trump announcing a month-long reprieve on the tariffs earlier this month, Ford said Ontario would not be postponing its own retaliatory measures, citing the uncertainty of the move.
