Keith Urban shared a video on Instagram of the moment he made a surprise appearance at Lainey Wilson’s headlining “Country’s Cool Again Tour” on Saturday night (June 1) in Downtown Nashville, Tennessee.
“I cannot believe that I got to do a song with this guy right here. Y’all welcome to the stage Keith Urban,” Wilson said to the sold-out crowd as Urban joined her in front of the audience. The duo delivered a rendition of their newly-released collaboration, “Go Home W U,” which Urban has previously shared was not meant to be a duet at first. It’s the latest song to release from Urban’s next studio album, following “Messed Up As Me” and “Straight Line.”
“I wrote ‘GO HOME W U’ in 2020 with BRELAND, Sam (Sumser) and Sean (Small),” Urban said via his record label. “We had a blast writing it. It started out as a late-night drum loop, I grabbed a bass guitar and started playing a simple recurring bass line. Before we knew it, we were writing a chorus that could be sung by any drunk person in any bar anywhere in the world. …A friend of mine suggested the idea of making the song a duet and I immediately thought of Lainey. Besides the fact that I love her voice, she’s got the swagger and attitude that fit so well with the song.”
Wilson added in a statement that Urban “has been someone in the industry I’ve taken notes from for a while now. From watching him at CMA Fest every year growing up to hearing the way he treats people up and down music row, he has taught me a lot. He’s a genuine supporter of mine and I am honored I get to continue to learn from one of the best. Getting to do a song with Keith is a notch on my belt I am very proud of.”
Wilson kicked off her 2024 trek with back-to-back nights at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville. Surprise guest appearances also included legendary artists Terri Clark and Wynonna Judd on Friday night (May 31, the same day Wilson opened her Nashville bar, Bell Bottoms Up), followed by surprises by Urban, Miranda Lambert and Jelly Roll on Saturday. Wilson, the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year, performed “Things A Man Oughta Know,” “Heart Like A Truck,” “Wildflowers And Wild Horses” and “Hang Tight Honey,” among other career-spanning hits, throughout her shows over the weekend. The “Country’s Cool Again Tour” kicks off as Wilson prepares to release her next full-length album, Whirlwind, due on August 23.
“Kicking off the domestic leg of my ‘Country’s Cool Again Tour,’ right at home in Nashville for a sold-out crowd at Ascend Ampitheatre was such a whirlwind experience,” Wilson said in a statement. “The fans were electric, and I’m so excited for everyone to see this show. We have so many surprises in store, and we’re just getting started!”
