Steelers Quarterback Dilemma: Fields or Wilson for Week 3?

As Week 3 approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers face a major decision at quarterback. Justin Fields, who has started the first two games of the season, is set to start again despite lackluster numbers. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson, still nursing a calf injury, will not be a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. The big question remains: Will Wilson regain his starting position from Fields, or has Fields cemented himself as the team’s top choice?

So far, Fields’ stats are underwhelming. He has a 70% completion rate, but only 237 passing yards across two games. His rushing yards are similarly unimpressive, marking a shift from his typically high-variance plays. Despite these modest figures, Fields hasn’t made significant mistakes, which is a critical factor for a team relying on its strong defense. Advanced stats place him 21st in EPA (Expected Points Added) per play and 25th in success rate among 33 qualifying quarterbacks.

In comparison, Wilson’s 2023 numbers showed lower variance but also more consistency. Yet, at 34 years old, he doesn’t bring the same athleticism or upside as Fields, who is much younger and currently winning games. As the Steelers continue to evaluate, it seems likely that Fields’ success will keep him under center for the foreseeable future.

Bryce Young Struggles Continue; Locker Room Frustration Grows

Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young is off to a rough start, raising questions about his ability to adapt to the NFL. After just two games, Young’s struggles with downfield accuracy and decision-making have already drawn visible frustration from veteran teammates like Adam Thielen. Young has completed just 11 of 36 passes beyond five yards, throwing four interceptions in the process.

The concerns stem from Young’s college profile, where he thrived in short-yardage situations but rarely pushed the ball downfield. His hesitance to step into clean pockets has led to costly sacks and missed opportunities, shaking the confidence of Carolina’s offense. As the team navigates these growing pains, the once-promising young QB may face increasing pressure to perform or risk losing the support of his teammates and coaches.

Saints’ Offensive Overhaul Sparks Resurgence

The New Orleans Saints have been one of the most impressive teams through the first two games of the season, thanks in large part to a drastic shift in their offensive approach. The switch from P. Carmichael to Clint Kubiak as offensive coordinator has paid off in a big way. The Saints’ offense is now much more dynamic, making life easier for quarterback Derek Carr, who has thrived under Kubiak’s system.

Carr has been hitting deep shots and commanding the offense with confidence. The change has been so stark that it almost seems like the team has undergone a complete transformation overnight. As the Saints prepare for their next challenge, the question will be whether they can maintain this level of play when faced with more adversity.
