Sheryl Swoopes is back in the news once again with her latest criticism of the Indiana Fever‘s Caitlin Clark as she declares the 22-year-old rookie’s stats are not dominant as she defends her previous comments.
In her debut season as a professional basketballer, Clark has posted 19.5 points per game, 8.4 assists per game, and 5.7 rebounds per game and has transformed the Fever from languishing at the foot of the Eastern Conference to playoff contenders.
A sure bet to win WNBA Rookie of the Year Award, the ex-Iowa Hawkeye has also found herself creeping into the MVP conversation as she looks to challenge the Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson for the award.
Yet despite her impressive start to life at the top of women’s basketball, Clark isn’t “dominant” according to Sheryl Swoopes, who doubled-down on her prediction that the young woman wouldn’t dominate the game.
“Those are hell of a numbers, but to me that’s not dominating,” Swoopes said to the Gil’s Arena podcast. “What I said was: I didn’t think Caitlin, or Angel [Reese], would come into the league and dominate immediately.
“Which I don’t think either of them did. I still don’t think she’s dominating, but she’s a different player than she was in the first half of the season.”
Who does Caitlin Clark play next?
Clark has exploded into form ever since the WNBA had its All-Star break by averaging 24.5 points, 8.9 assists as well as 5.4 rebounds per game and has only shot below 19 points on two occasions since July 19.
As a result, the Fever find themselves in the WNBA playoffs with a .513 record and in third place in the Eastern Conference although they have one more fixture left to close the regular season out with.
Clark and the Indiana Fever will take on the Washington Mystics on Thursday, September 18 with tip-off expected at 19:00 ET/16:00 PT before the WNBA playoffs begin from Sunday, September 22.
