The Chicago Sky (11-19) are going through a rough patch, having lost four consecutive games and five of their first six matchups after the Olympic break. This has left fans increasingly frustrated and vocal about their concerns.
Wednesday’s 74-70 loss to the Washington Mystics (9-22) only fueled the fire. A significant point of contention among fans was the decision by the Sky’s first-year head coach, Teresa Weatherspoon, to keep rookie Kamilla Cardoso on the bench during much of the fourth quarter.
Cardoso had been performing well, contributing 10 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. However, as the Mystics launched an 11-0 run in the closing moments, fans were left questioning why Cardoso wasn’t on the floor to help stop the momentum.
Calling for Weatherspoon dismissal
Before the Olympic break, the Sky held a 10-14 record and seemed poised for a potential playoff run, aiming to extend their streak of five consecutive postseason appearances.
However, their recent skid has put them in a precarious position. They currently occupy the eighth seed, just one game ahead of the Atlanta Dream and two games clear of the Mystics, leaving little room for error.
The Sky’s prospects could improve with the return of their top scorer, Chennedy Carter, who missed Wednesday’s game due to health and safety protocols. Several team members had reportedly been tested for COVID after feeling unwell, and Carter‘s return to the lineup will be critical as the Sky look to regain their footing and secure a playoff spot.
