Caitlin Clark‘s impact on the WNBA has been nothing short of remarkable, both on and off the court. As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft, Clark‘s presence in the league has not only increased its visibility but also generated significant financial gains, according to finance expert Dr. Ryan Brewer.
Brewer, an associate professor of finance at Indiana University Columbus, has done extensive research on the economic effects of athletes in professional sports.
When examining Clark‘s influence on the WNBA, he was stunned by the results. After recalculating his figures multiple times, Brewer concluded that Clark is responsible for an astounding 26.5 percent of the league’s activity, including attendance, merchandise sales, and television viewership.
“The numbers are so staggering,” Brewer commented.
“They don’t even seem real.”
Unprecedented Ticket Sales and Merchandise Revenue
In 2024, one out of every six WNBA tickets sold was tied to Caitlin Clark. Total league TV viewership soared by 300%, with nearly half of the broadcast value stemming from Indiana Fever games featuring Clark. Even merchandise sales exploded by 500%, with Clark leading the charge. Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese trailed behind as the second top seller but couldn’t match Clark’s overwhelming popularity.
Boosting Indianapolis’ Economy
Clark’s influence has also rippled through Indianapolis’ economy. Brewer estimates she has contributed over $36 million to the city’s revenue in just one year—a staggering figure for any athlete, let alone a rookie in the WNBA.
Angel Reese Fires Back
But while Clark’s impact is undeniable, it has ignited competitive tension. Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, who has been vocal about her ambitions, declared, “I can surpass her!” Reese’s determination only adds fuel to the growing rivalry between the two stars, setting the stage for even more heated matchups in the future.
The Bigger Picture
Despite Clark’s contributions, her WNBA salary pales compared to her worth. However, lucrative endorsement deals like her $28 million partnership with Nike have helped close the gap. Whether Reese can truly rival Clark’s meteoric rise remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Clark’s influence has forever changed the WNBA, and the rivalry with Reese promises to keep fans—and dollars—pouring in.
