The University of Nevada women’s volleyball team has decided to forfeit an upcoming match against San Jose State University, citing concerns over fairness in sports due to a transgender player on the opposing team. The decision to forfeit was made independently by the players, who held a vote and chose not to participate in the match, highlighting their concerns about competing against a biological male athlete, Blair Fleming, who identifies as female.

 

 

Despite the players’ decision, the University of Nevada has released a statement clarifying that the players’ choice does not reflect the official position of the institution. In a statement provided to Outkick, the university emphasized its commitment to moving forward with the match as scheduled, citing adherence to state and federal laws as well as NCAA regulations.

 

In a statement, the university said, “The player’s decision does not represent the position of the University. The University of Nevada and its athletic programs are governed by the Nevada constitution, which protects equality of rights under the law… The University intends to move forward with the match as scheduled, and the players may choose not to participate on the day of the contest.”

 

The players’ decision comes amid ongoing debates around the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
